Book Spotlight Redfern by G.D. Tinnams

About the Book

Title: Redfern

Author: Gary Tinnams

Genre: Science Fiction

Redfern Front Cover“Humans don’t project past their own frequency. It’s why you’re so isolated as a species. The beings of other frequencies can only witness what you build and feel what you destroy.”

Earth – Tomorrow – The Singularity:-

The machines have taken over and mankind is cast out.

Millennia later, the inhospitable planet of Redfern is in the process of being made habitable for the proposed rebirth of the entire human race. All is proceeding as planned until Enforcer, Ted Holloway, witnesses the unexpected appearance of a long dead and former friend – A man who can become invisible and immaterial, a man that can penetrate any and all security.

A man whose very existence should be impossible.

As Ted and his superior, Lisa Carmichael, investigate further, they face dangers and creatures that challenge their very concept of reality and also encounter the colony’s caretaker Machine Mind and the human Security Commissioner, both of whom have opposing and intricate agendas of their own.

For the true nature of Redfern is stranger and more deadly than anything Holloway or Carmichael can possibly imagine.

And it could change or destroy humanity forever…

GDTinnamsPhotoI have been reading and watching science fiction since I was old enough to watch Peter Davison walking around an unrealistic jungle set in Doctor Who. The first set of sci-fi books I ever read was The Tripods trilogy by John Christopher without ever having watched the resultant TV series. The Tripods were scary.

Over the years I’ve come to love a variety of science fiction and fantasy books from many different eras and so came to the conclusion that I wanted to create my own adventures, set in my own worlds, with characters that acted and felt like real people. My third novel ‘Redfern’ is an adventure story which poses question about alien first contact, artificial intelligence, the singularity and the continued survival of our species at any cost.

“If you love your science fiction on the cinematic side but also want big ideas, intelligently explored, look no further.”

Title: The Last Grand Master

Author: Andrew Q. Gordon

Genre: Scifi / Fantasy

In a war that shook the earth, the six gods of Nendor defeated their brother Neldin, God of Evil. For three thousand years, Nendor and the Seven Kingdoms have known peace and prosperity and Neldin’s evil was nearly forgotten.

But then Meglar, wizard-king of Zargon, unleashes the dark magic of the underworld and creates an army of creatures to carry out his master’s will. One by one, the sovereign realms fall as a new war between the gods threatens to engulf Nendor.

Leading the opposition to Meglar is Grand Master Farrell. Young and untried, Farrell carries a secret that could hold the key to defeating Meglar—or it could destroy the world.

Farrell is joined by Nerti, queen of the unicorns, and Miceral, an immortal muchari warrior the Six have chosen as Farrell’s mate. As Farrell and his new allies make plans to counter Neldin’s evil, Meglar forces their hand when he invades a neighboring kingdom. Rushing to help their ally, Farrell and Miceral find themselves in the middle of the battle. Cut off from help, Farrell attempts an untried spell that will either turn the tide or cost him and Miceral their lives.

Book Blast: Captain Hawkins by H. Peter Alesso

The author will be awarding a $25 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour.

Genre: Sci-fi

Captain HawkinsJamie Hawkins was living on an obscure planet in the twenty third-century when on one fateful night—his life changed forever. His heroic effort to save the lives of innocent women and children, caught in the cross-fire of war, placed him squarely in the crosshairs of avenging soldiers.

A former marine, Hawkins was stunned when his rescue effort was seen as treachery. Unfairly convicted of treason by a corrupt judge, he was sentenced to life imprisonment at hard labor on an infamous penal colony.

Once in prison, Hawkins was mistreated by a paranoid warden, but his courage and perseverance won him the admiration and trust of his fellow convicts. While he was plotting his escape, an enemy attacked the planet—giving this daring warrior his chance. Together with his fellow prisoners, he launched a bold assault and high-jacked an enemy warship.

From then on, the exploits of Captain Jamie Hawkins became legendary.

“Sir, I was working with the data techs trying to analyze the communication patterns of the enemy fleet,” said Joshua, licking his dry lips, excitedly. “And I’ve came across a very unusual signal.”

Hawkins gave him an encouraging nod.

“It was a burst of radio signals from deep space. I traced it to either a 4 billion-year-old star in a constellation 44.4 light years away, or to another star in that same constellation, but much farther away. That means that the radio waves have been travelling to us for at least forty-four point four years.”

Hawkins said, “Deep space radio signals have many plausible explanations, such as radio interference from planets, or rogue signals caused by local planet microwave devices.

“That’s true, Captain. It could be just the effect of a natural space object like a pulsating quasar, but it’s also possible . . . I think maybe . . . it could be a message from another civilization.”

Now smiling broadly, Hawkins said, “Given the unlikeness of that, why are you concerned?”

“Because it was not a one-off event,” said Joshua excitedly and then pausing to catch his breath. “I’ve recorded a half dozen repeating signals from the exact same source.”

Nodding, Hawkins said, “That’s a little more interesting, but there are explanations for that too.”

“But Captain, the implications could be mind-blowing. Imagine, what if it was an alien civilization, and they were far more advanced than us, and they were trying to make contact? After centuries of fruitlessly scanning the stars and finding no evidence that anyone else is out there, this could be . . .  could be . . .”

Joshua became paralyzed by his own imagination.

“Joshua, even if this signal were not natural, it might still be the product of one of Earth’s colonies—not aliens.”

“No sir, I’ve checked. There were no Earth colonies in the vicinity of the signal’s star cluster when we last had contact with Earth, fifty years ago,” said Joshua.

Joshua wanted to argue further, but couldn’t offer any additional proof for his cause.

Hawkins said, “I agree, we should continue to monitor this frequency, but for now, it’ll have to remain a mystery.”

It was only a few days later that Joshua returned to argue, “I’ve been working to decrypt the deep space signal using our AI computer with the help of a data tech.”

Hawkins was surprised, but also impressed with Joshua’s initiative.

“What does a deep space signal have to do with our enemy’s Top Secrets communication network?”

“You’ll have to explain that.”

“Let me give you a metaphor for how I solved this puzzle, because it is a puzzle.”

“Go on.”

“Think of a portrait of a woman, say the Mona Lisa. Now consider a jigsaw puzzle of the Mona Lisa—a picture of a woman cut into a thousand irregularly sized pieces and spread out for someone to reassemble.”

“A kid’s game.”

“Yes, sir.”

Book Spotlight: The Moreva of Astoreth by Roxanne Bland

Genre: Science Fiction

moa-cover-lighter-1In the world-building tradition of Andre Norton, Anne McCaffrey and Ursula K. LeGuin, The Moreva of Astoreth is a blend of science fiction, romance, and adventure in a unique, richly imagined imperialistic society in which gods and science are indelibly intertwined.

It is the story of priestess, scientist, and healer Moreva Tehi, the spoiled, headstrong granddaughter of a powerful goddess who is temporarily exiled from Temple life in her beloved desert home to a volatile far northern corner of the planet for neglecting to perform her sacred duty, only to venture into dangerous realms of banned experimentation, spiritual rebirth, and fervent, forbidden love.

Interview with author Roxanne Bland

What inspired you to come up with the idea for your book?

Actually, the first inspiration for this book came thirty, thirty-five years ago. A friend and I collaborated on a story while we were in college. I’d always wanted to write it down, but never seemed to find the time. Though I’ve forgotten the details, the basic storyline has always stuck with me. Years later, I read Zecharia Sitchin’s Earth Chronicles series, in which he posits that aliens looking for gold came to Earth, created humans, set themselves up as gods, and founded the Sumerian civilization. Then, years after that, the second inspiration hit me—why not find a way to meld our story and Sitchin’s theories? And so I did, and the result is The Moreva of Astoreth.

Do you have a favorite scene? If so, what was it?

I think my favorite is when Moreva Tehi and Laerd Teger were trapped by the mudslide. Sheltered Tehi had to dig deep into herself to help them both survive. She couldn’t let her fear get the best of her.

Is there a character you’d trade places with? If so, why?

Moreva Tehi. I’d love to date Laerd Teger. And I’ve always liked science, though I was never any good at it. My talents lie elsewhere.

Any challenges in writing this book?

Actually, The Moreva of Astoreth was fairly easy to write. It just sort of flowed.

Any tips to share with someone who wants to be published?

If you want to go the traditional route, you must polish and hone, hone and polish your manuscript until it’s sharp as a knife blade and shiny as a new penny. Develop a thick skin—you will be rejected, and usually without a real explanation, other than “it’s not right for us,” assuming you get an answer at all. Or you can go the independent author—indie—route, and publish it yourself. Or you can do what I did—set up my own publishing house.

Do you have a favorite book (out of the ones you’ve written)?

The Underground. It’s about a werewolf trapped in a bitter love triangle with a vampire and a mage, who falls for an amnesiac space alien who may or may not be a serial killer. This book is important to me because I was going through a difficult time in my life and writing it was quite cathartic. Every character, even the “bad guy,” is a facet of me. And then there’s the message of the story: oppress a person or people hard and long enough, and they will rise against you, and when they do, it won’t be pretty. That was exactly how I felt.

When you’re not writing, what are you up to?

Working, usually. My day job is pretty demanding, which is one reason why I write in the wee hours. I also sneak time off to read whenever I can.

What do you love most about writing?

Well, in general, I get sheer joy from writing. What I really love is watching the story unfold before me.

Do you have a favorite writing environment?

I can’t say it’s my favorite, but I do all my writing in my office. I marvel at people I see in coffee shops, parks and whatnot pounding away at their laptops, oblivious to the tumult around them. I can’t do that because I always end up watching the people instead of my screen. I marvel that they can type on those small keyboards—my fingers get tangled up and I’m doing more backspacing than actual typing.

How do you go about choosing the names for your characters?

Usually I sit back, close my eyes, and let names float through my head. When I think of one that matches my character, that’s the one I choose. Other times, I’ll go to a website for baby names and take a look through them. Be careful doing that, though. The way these cookies track you, all of a sudden I was seeing ads for baby stuff. Very annoying.

Do you have a favorite genre you like to read (other than the ones you write in)?

Well, I have two favorites: thrillers and horror. I lover Jeffrey Deaver and Tess Gerritsen. As for horror, of course there’s the master, Stephen King. But there’s also Peter Straub and Dean Koontz.

What’s your writing routine?

I get up at about two a.m., and write until about six or so. Longer if I’m really into a scene.

What’s on your “bucket list?”

Some of these I can’t do because of physical limitations, but here goes: be a pilot. Visit Antarctica. Hike the Himalayas. Tour Morocco and Egypt—heck, tour Africa while I’m at it. Take a train across the U.S. Have a house in the mountains and a house on the beach—summer in the mountains, winter on the beach.

What would be a must-have for a romantic date?

Romantic date? What’s that?

Print or e-books–do you have a preference?

I prefer print books, but you can’t beat e-books for traveling.

What’s your favorite song on your playlist?

Anything by Beethoven.

Favorite time of day & why?

Three a.m. I’m a night owl, and I much prefer the night to the day, though daytime has its good points (when it’s sunny). Besides, it’s when I get my best writing done.

How long have you been a writer?

Writing was a hidden passion for me. I started writing as a child; I won a city-wide contest when I was about ten. But in all those years, from childhood to adulthood, I didn’t take it seriously. I was into music (I am, or was, a pianist), and writing was just something to do to pass the time. I didn’t get serious about writing until 2001, when I was going through that dark period I mentioned earlier. That’s when I discovered that I loved writing. I’ve never looked back.

5 Stars

Intricate worldbuilding and an intriguing story make this an exciting read. I was really immersed in the culture and the story of Moreva Tehi. I think the comparisons to authors such as Anne McCaffrey and Ursula K. LeGuin are quite apt. You’ll lose yourself in the world author Roxanne Bland has created. This is highly recommended for science fiction readers and anyone who enjoys an adventure.

Excerpt & Giveaway: The After War by Brendon Zenner

The after war

GENRE: Dystopian, post apocalyptic

*The book will be on sale for $0.99 during the tour*

the after warTwo years have passed since mankind faced extinction.

Brain Rhodes and his cousin, Steven, are leaving the protection of their underground bunker for the first time, after a cataclysmic war and unrelenting disease ravaged the earth.

On the other side of the North American continent, young Simon Kalispell is leaving the safety and seclusion of his cabin deep in the woods, traveling with his aging canine companion, Winston.

For individual reasons, these men are traveling east, where the fragmented lives of a small number of survivors will soon be decided by the choices of a corrupt few.

Simon Kalispell and Brian Rhodes are not yet aware, but the strength that resides inside them will soon be tested, and destiny will call for their fates to be forever intertwined.

Brian looked down the entry chute to Steven at the bottom. He knew that five minutes ago, the only thought going through Steven’s mind had been the complete and utter fear of facing whatever unknown nature of humanity might remain outside that bunker door. Now his cousin looked panicked as the filtered light reflected the sheen of sweat on his forehead, his body tensed, as if the all-encompassing blackness in that room was squeezing him toward the exit. Steven’s eyes darted over his shoulder in the direction of the one piece of equipment they had not shut down entirely—the walk-in freezer. The red, glowing light from the switch illuminated the far wall. Steven seemed frozen, transfixed.

Not the time to be thinking about what’s in there, Brian thought.

Book Spotlight: Sabotaged Desires by Rebecca Airies

Hi, thank you so much for hosting me. I’m so excited to be here! – Rebecca

Sabotaged Desires by Rebecca AiriesBook Description

Suz Lore thought she had everything she wanted, a job as an engineer and a position on a colony ship headed to another planet. That was before her arranged ménage marriage with Robert Smith and David Bradford turned into a disaster.

She’d thought they were building more than a sizzling sexual relationship, but all they do is argue now.

She isn’t surprised when they’re sequestered in a room in order to reignite the passion between them and learn to trust again.

Robert believes she betrayed him while David is stuck in the middle of their conflict. Getting Robert to talk about what made him angry is difficult, but they discover there’s far more behind their problems than a message with misleading information.

A virus has overtaken the ship’s computers, put them on a different heading and cut them off from all communication. They must work together to find a way to survive and rebuild their relationship

“Get your ass to the hatch and let us out now,” Robert yelled.

Ever the demanding Captain. Robert expected people to follow his orders immediately.  He’d behaved like an ass lately. That arrogance set her nerves on edge. His tendency to bark out commands even when on personal time made her want to rebel or strike out at him.

The argument hadn’t stayed within the confines of their quarters. Suz didn’t know how he was surprised that they’d been placed here. At the moment, his yelling was getting on her nerves.

“They won’t let us out. Not until they’re convinced our problems are solved.” She eased to the edge of the big bed. At least, she wasn’t nauseous from coming out of stasis or have a headache any longer.

David strode to the side of the bed, sat beside her and put an arm around her shoulders. “Are you all right?”

His dark blond hair stuck up in spikes, looking delightfully mussed. She only wished she’d been the one to run her fingers through it. Concern turned the corners of his full lips down. His muscled chest was bare offering yet another lure for exploration and he wore only loose, light blue pants which most men chose to wear into the stasis pods.

“The pain has faded. I sort of expected this after our last rotation, although waking up from stasis in this room scared me and for a little while, I didn’t realize what had happened.” She relaxed against the strength of his arm for a moment. Normally, they were left in the open cryopods until they were able to walk. She’d almost panicked when she woke here. Her heart had felt as if it were going to burst through her chest.

The feel of his muscled body against hers soothed a little of the tension and worry. Between David and her, they would find a way to get through to Robert. Even though they couldn’t get out, she didn’t fool herself that this would be easy.

“So did I. I think he’s the only one who thought things could go on as they were.” David smiled and used his free hand to brush the silver blond hair away from her face.

“They should stay out of our business.” Robert glared at her.

His dark brown eyes moved from her to David. He didn’t look mussed or even sleepy as David did, but then again, his close-cropped black hair always seemed to be in perfect order. The dark brown skin of his chest gleamed. Her eyes hungrily trailed over the expanse and down to the white shorts at his waist. Even though anger pulsed through her at his stubbornness, she hungered for his touch. Her body remembered the pleasure he’d given her.

“Our business is everyone’s concern. We’re on a colony ship. There are only married groups here. There aren’t extra women and men and our group will be the only people on the planet until more colonists are sent, which could be years. The crap you’ve been doing can’t continue.” David straightened a little and his eyes locked on Robert.

Pangaea: Eden’s Planet by Tom Johnson

New Pangaea1Pangaea: Eden’s Planet was a concept I came up with several years ago while looking for a possible book proposal to submit to Hollywood Studios. Yes, I’ve submitted several proposals without success yet, but I keep trying. I’ve actually gone through two agents that were not hungry enough to sell my books to Hollywood.

Basically, Pangaea: Eden’s Planet is a character-driven novel and focuses on seven astronauts on a mission to Mars to begin a terra-farming project after a nuclear war on Earth.

But problems arise when they enter a space anomaly that disables their ship, sending them back in time. The planet’s gravity pulls them back to Earth, where they crash land on an alien world 250 million years in the past.

Their mission now turns into a survival situation, as fierce reptiles of the Permian Period, as well as explosive nature, endangers their very lives.

The seven astronauts are scientists in special fields that will be needed to fulfill their mission on Mars. This includes Colonel Evelyn Peterson and Major Adam Cooper, the pilots of Galileo Two; Colonel Peterson is the leader of the mission, the major is her second in command. I gave each character individual personalities.

The subplot was a romance building between Peterson and Cooper. When I first conceived the story, Evelyn was black and Cooper white, which I figured would be one of the problems keeping them apart, but later I changed my mind about pursuing this element of the story, and dropped all reference to her race. After all, her responsibility of keeping those under her command alive in a harsh environment is concern enough. Besides, in the 21st Century race should no longer be a stumbling block to romance.

My love of biology and study of paleontology and other zoological areas of science has always been a driving force in my writing. In Pangaea: Eden’s Planet, I fill my world with known creatures from the period, as well as a few from my own imagination.

Sixty million years before the dawn of the dinosaurs, there were still predators as menacing as T-Rex. Colonel Peterson and Major Cooper were the only ones armed, and that consisted of small caliber pistols, each holding 15-round clips of ammunitions, and they were faced by incredible odds.

Their survival would require ingenuity and fearlessness. We have seven people alone in a world of fierce reptiles, volcanic activity, and danger from the heavens. But yet love will also find a way.

Readers that enjoy a story with action and danger, with a light touch of romantic tease will find Pangaea: Eden’s Planet a work of fiction both entertaining and, hopefully, memorable.Tom's Back Cover Picture

There is drama and humor as the characters face each situation, good and bad, with the knowledge that life or death could be ahead of them. Their survival may depend on their next action. You will find laughter at times, and cry at others, but I believe you will come to know and love the characters, whatever their faults might be. Happy reading.
