Worldbuilding for the Family Pride Paranormal Romance Series

Family Pride: Love and Challenges by Deborah A BaileyWhen I got the idea for my paranormal romance series, Family Pride, I was inspired by the TV show, Bewitched. Looking back on it now, I realize I didn’t get all the subtexts.

Here’s Samantha, a witch with the power to appear and disappear, fly, travel from one place to another in a literal blink of an eye. She’s lived for hundreds of years and will most likely live for hundreds more. She falls in love with an average guy and decided to live as a housewife in the suburbs.

Samantha gives up her status for love—though in spite of her husband Darrin’s desire that she give up using witchcraft, she never completely lives a normal, mundane life. Relatives and friends pop in and out, and eventually the children are born with powers as well.

When I wrote Family Pride: Love and Challenges (book 1), I wanted to flip the script. What would happen if a human started dating a lion shapeshifter? She would have to learn to navigate his world, instead of the other way around. But in this world, the shifters are living the regular, suburban life. They have their own customs and conventions, but they’re also under the radar as far as the rest of the world is concerned. Like Samantha, they have powers and rituals, but they have to keep everything under wraps so that the human population doesn’t discover that they exist.

I did some research on lions and their behavior, then added a few twists for the shifter version. For instance, there are challenges for domination and control—which figure into the plot of book 1. The shifters group themselves into prides, which are made up of extended families. So there is a normal world on one side, and the paranormal world on the other and Mac and Zora have to balance between the two.

In Family Pride: Blood Fever, Mac hints that other magical creatures exist in the everyday world (in addition to shapeshifters).

Family Pride: Blood FeverOf course she was going to ask the very thing he wanted to hold back. “I didn’t run into another shifter. There was something out there. I saw a shape in the darkness, like another lion. But it moved so fast…I felt the claws and my instinct took over. I fought, but it was like fighting air. My claws went through the thing.”

Zora shivered against him. “Is that possible? That’s unbelievable.”

“Most people think shifters are unbelievable. But here you are mated to one.”

“Yeah, you’re right.” She ran her fingers along his chest. “Some-times that’s hard to believe too. All the things I thought were just stories and fairy tales are real.”

Mac chuckled. “Let’s not get the fairies involved. They can be fierce when they’re pissed off.”

“You mean-” She lifted her head up again like she’d been yanked. “They’re real too?”

“Zora, baby. You’ve got so much to learn.” Mac leaned in for a kiss.

What really interested me about creating the series, was to show how what appears to be normal depends on how you define it. There are all kinds of worlds intersecting all the time, and what you see on the surface doesn’t tell the whole story.

From Outer Space to Shapeshifters – Writing My First Paranormal Series

Family Pride: Love and Challenges by Deborah A BaileyMy genre of choice is science fiction, even for my short stories. For a long time I’ve wanted to give the paranormal genre a try. So, I decided to start with the Family Pride paranormal romance series about lion shapeshifters.

Wolves are a popular staple of paranormal romance, and most shifter stories I’ve read have featured them.

I was considering going in that direction as well, that is until I saw a program on the Smithsonian network. It featured a pride of lions and followed them for a period of about three months.

After seeing that show, I knew I had to write about lion shifters. Of course it helped that the name of the series, Family Pride, had been in my mind all along!

Since I had some ideas about the storyline and the characters, my next steps were to create a fantasy world for my characters to live in. Would everyone know that shifters existed? What would their culture be like? How could I introduce all the elements without massive info dumps?

It was actually easy to answer those questions. In my story world the shifters are under the radar, which adds tension because they always have to be careful not to reveal who they are.

I paired a lion shifter hero with a human heroine. As she learned about the shifters, the reader would learn too. The conflict would arise as the relationship matured and the couple had to learn to balance between two worlds.

As far as the culture, I added some elements from real lions and mixed in some ideas of my own. Shifter lions live in prides run by powerful families. Like humans in the real world, they have lots of family drama. But for the most part their concern is to keep the family members protected and to ensure that the next generation of shifters uphold the family legacy.

The lion shifters in my series have traditions as well. In Family Pride: Love and Challenges and Family Pride: Blood Fever, Mac and Zora (the hero and heroine) take part in a mating ritual and an “introduction ceremony” (the equivalent of a wedding reception). Their mating ritual in Love and Challenges was particularly fun to write. But I won’t give away any spoilers – you’ll have to check it out for yourself!

Family Pride: Blood FeverIn science fiction, things must be possible or at least probable. But in fantasy there are no restrictions. At first it was hard to write a fantasy story because I kept wanting to explain what was happening in real-world terms.

But as I kept writing, it got easier to add more fantasy and let go of the need to explain it with science. That’s very obvious in Family Pride: Blood Fever, where paranormal elements drive the story.

The series will continue with book 3, Family Pride: Love and Legacy, which will feature one of the secondary characters. In that book, I’m introducing another shifter group and a bit of mythology from our world.

For instance in Egyptian mythology, the warrior goddess Sekhmet is usually depicted as a woman with the head of a lion. What a perfect character for a story about lion shifters!

What started out as an experiment in writing in a new genre has taught me a lot about creating fantasy worlds and making them plausible – even if they’re not possible (as far as we know). You never know where ideas will come from and how they can help you create fantastic new worlds.

I hope you’ll check out the series. It was a lot of fun to write.

An Inside Look at… Confessions of a Vampire’s Lover

by Kelli A. Wilkins

Hi everyone,

Not all romances are the same, and not all romance authors are the same. Although I write in several romance genres (contemporary, gay, historical, fantasy), I also like to write horror stories. Many people think that’s an odd combination, but I like to say that one half of my brain writes the horror, and the other half writes the romance. So naturally, it was only a matter of time before I combined the two and started writing paranormal romances.

My latest contemporary paranormal, Confessions of a Vampire’s Lover, is a different type of romance. For starters, the novella is told in the first person from the hero’s point of view. The story also makes use of a setting where you don’t normally find vampires—the beach!

I got the idea for the story while sitting on a nearly deserted beach at the end of the summer season. (I’m not a beach person, but I was there with my husband, a surfer.) As I sat there watching the few people milling around, I wondered: “What if a vampire went to the beach? And what if she fell in love with a surfer?”

I liked the idea of contrasting typical sun worshipping beachgoers and surfers with a darkness-loving elusive vampire. Besides, what could be more mismatched than a die-hard surfer falling in love with a nocturnal blood-drinker?

I started toying with ideas and knew that although the book is about a vampire, I wanted to keep the central focus on Brian and Anya’s relationship and not on the ‘bloodier’ aspects of vampirism (show her feeding, etc.) There’s a fine line when blending horror and romance into paranormal romance. Too much gore or a “too terrifying” creature can snap the readers (and the characters) out of the romance and into a full-on horror story.

When I wrote the book I made sure that the love scenes were highly sensual and almost surreal. Aside from being a vampire, Anya is a woman with needs, and she makes sure Brian satisfies them. I don’t remember how I was inspired to have the story told by Brian, but it worked. Readers and reviewers like the first-person aspect—it pulls you into a story that would seem unbelievable.

Several people have asked me if it’s hard to write horror and romance. Not really. I enjoy it. Writing horror allows me to change up my writing style, use different settings, and create characters you wouldn’t find in a romance. My horror stories are more psychological/spooky/creepy than gory, and I like to explore darker plots and not always give the characters a happy ending (as I do in my romances).

Here’s the summary and an excerpt from Confessions of a Vampire’s Lover:

Confessions of a Vampire’s Lover

The moment Brian spotted Anya sitting on the moonlit beach, he was hooked. Beautiful, smart, and sexy, Anya was the girl of his dreams. She didn’t mind that he spent the hot summer days riding the ocean waves, because once the sun set, he belonged to her—all night long!

Everything is perfect between them—until Brian discovers Anya’s shocking secret. Can Brian give up the sun, sand, and surf to be with the woman he loves?

Read Brian’s first-hand account of their unusual love story in… Confessions of a Vampire’s Lover.

And a steamy excerpt:

Anya draped her arms around my neck and pulled me close, as if she were hungry for my touch. Her wet lips met mine, and a shock coursed through my body. Anya’s lips were soft and supple, but ice cold. It was the strangest kiss I’d ever experienced, and it stirred something primal in me.

Anya kissed me deeper and twisted her tongue around mine. The world seemed to spin, and once again I felt myself falling under her spell. I was hers, willing to do whatever she wanted. After a moment, she released me.

“Wait for me on the beach. I’ll let you take me any way you want,” she whispered, then dove back into the water.

I made my way to shore as quietly as possible and flopped onto the sand. I closed my eyes and tried to think rationally. What was Anya doing out there? Nobody could see in the ocean at night or safely swim with sharks after dark. Maybe Anya was a mermaid. I chuckled at my own stupidity. Mermaids weren’t cold, they couldn’t vanish into thin air, and they didn’t hide from the sun. That was a vamp—

“Look what I found.”

I opened my eyes. Anya stood over me, holding something shiny in her hand. The gold ring gleamed in the moonlight. I took it from her and studied it. The stone was dark, almost blood red. I handed it back to her and she slipped it on her ring finger.

“You really should let me explore. There are a lot of interesting things down there,” she said.

I scowled. “How did you find that in the water? It’s pitch black.”

“Don’t ask, Brian.” Anya straddled my hips and kissed me. She bent close, offering me her breast. I drew it into my mouth and sucked eagerly. To my surprise, she felt flushed and warm, and tasted salty, like the ocean.

Anya gasped and arched her head back. “Make love to me, Brian. I want to feel alive,” she said as she unzipped my jeans….

Book Excerpt

Etienne watches me drinking from the calabash, my giant gourd. The libation to the spirits I pour onto the courtyard stones. My feet shift, spirits pass through me. I twirl in waves of motion, never breaking the rhythm of my dance. Breathing fast, I lift my body, spinning on my toes. He stands in the darkness near the doorway, passion in his moonlit eyes, not knowing that I see him. My wide skirt swirls above the candle circle. Watch me dance, my love, I whisper. Now my feet lift high and pound the stones like flying mallets, while candle flames lick my toes.

A tangle of bedclothes is spread across the four-poster in my boudoir. Only hours ago we rolled on that mattress, making the canopy rattle. He does love me, that I know. And he’s seen my talents with the magic. His devotion sends the voudou pumping through veins.

This café au lait woman, his octoroon mistress, dances full out. But soon my body will be melting, shrinking, and that he’s never seen. My spinning stops, my skirt ripples as I stand before my altar praying to the saints. My candles flicker. The power’s in me, and just like that I see the flames turn blue. My skin tightens, bristles. I’m sinking now. Breathe, breathe, I say to myself. I’m down, I’m down.

It’s too dark for Etienne to see what’s happening to me, but his eyes widen as my form changes in the shadows of the yard. He watches from the open doorway of my parlor and then rushes through onto the courtyard stones. He stands tall in his finely tailored suit. But the mist rises around me, so that I am hidden. At this moment I am changing, rising up on my haunches.

“Lalin,” he calls, “Lalin, where are you?”

I sit, still and elegant, and then lower my head to lick my midnight fur and wipe my whiskers with a paw. But Etienne stumbles in the mist, swaying in the darkness as he trips over my candles and falls on the stone floor. But magic makes him sleep, distorts his memory, and gives me time to find my answers.

I have much to learn this night when I travel in my feline shape. And this is how I know what happens in the back streets and secret hideaways in our New Orleans.

Book Spotlight: Rising for Autumn by Katherine McIntyre

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Crisis and danger have become second nature for Alanna Carrington—after all, as the boss of the Philadelphia Coven, she’s responsible for upholding the laws amongst the supernatural. Which means when the Order of the Serpent rears its ugly head, this time with the most powerful necromancer this city’s ever seen, she’s the one person who can keep Philly safe. Ex-Order djinn and now ally, Samuel Karim happens to be the best suited guy to help. Except he’s also the first man who’s stoked her interest in far too long, and ever since she commandeered the lamp he’s tethered to for safekeeping, he also hates her guts.

As the Order gathers the necromancers of her city and sparks a dangerous alliance, she finds herself working with Samuel Karim more and more. Hatred burns to passion, and when he exhibits a strength and compassion that breaks through her ironclad defenses, she finds herself falling deeper despite the complications between them. Yet with her city under siege and their lives on the line, the sharp desire between them erupts into the temptation to break their own rules, before the Order of the Serpent robs them of the chance permanently.
Book Excerpt

Even though her toes had iced over and her fingers had lost feeling, she didn’t want to leave. Couldn’t bear the idea of returning to the regular world, not after the transformation that had occurred between them, something brilliant and blinding and a chance she didn’t think she’d ever have. In lieu of that, she couldn’t bear to bring up thoughts of a future, of the problems crowding out the perfection she’d experienced tonight with him.

Even if she got only this one night with Samuel Karim, it would be enough. This night had been the incendiary sort of experience to brand her soul for a lifetime. If she lived long enough to grow gray and wrinkled, she’d remember every detail of today. Every second she spent by his side.

The purple sky spread out full of distant promise, the stars twinkling just out of reach. She memorized the proud arch of his nose, his full lips, and the somber eyes of a man who’d experienced enough grief to make anyone a monster. And yet, she’d never met a more caring individual in her life. A thousand words blossomed to her lips and died there, because no amount of speaking could communicate the depths of how he’d affected her. Of how he’d changed her.

Author Bio

A modern day Renaissance-woman, Katherine McIntyre has learned soapmaking, beer brewing, tea blending, and most recently roasting coffee. Most of which make sure she’s hydrated and bathed while she spends the rest of her time writing. With a desire to travel and more imagination than she knows what to do with, all the stories jumping around in her head led to the logical route of jotting them down on paper. She writes novels with snarky women, ragtag crews, and guys with bad attitudes. High chances for a passionate speech thrown into the mix.

Book Excerpt

“What’s up?” I asked Marcus as Jill and Jessica disappeared through the doorway. He closed the book he was reading to show me the cover. It was the novel we had chosen in class.

“The library only had one copy, so I guess we can share.”

“Okay,” I agreed.

“I’ve finished the first chapter already. Should I pass it on to you?”

“No. Keep it for now. I’ll get it from you on Thursday.” I had no desire to start reading a new novel. “How does it seem so far?”

“It’s too early to tell.” Marcus gave a half-smile.

The sun sunk into the mountain behind him, making the trees blaze with their crimson and gold leaves. I raised my hand above my eyes to shield them from the one sunbeam that aimed directly at my face. “Sit for a minute,” he offered while he moved his backpack from the space next to him. I, instead, plopped down straight across from him. I didn’t want to give him the wrong idea.

“Do we need to talk about our project?”

“We don’t have to,” he answered. “We can talk about something else.”

Maybe he already had the wrong idea. I shook my head and opened my mouth to tell him I had a boyfriend, but he stopped me with quiet laughter. “We can be friends, right?” he asked.

“Friends. Sure.” Deep down, I knew better. A speck of chemistry flickered between us, threatening to ignite. For weeks it had smoldered, though it somehow existed with the total opposite of chemistry all at once. His eyes drew me in, yet the familiarity of them unsettled me. Logic told me to stand up and walk away, but I couldn’t. What was my affinity for Marcus Riley?

Sunrise Over Brasov by Stephanie BurkhartRosa Getzi lives a life of intrigue at Poiana Brasov with Clement, a werewolf, and Cassandra, the witch. Her past doesn’t matter to her – until she discovers what it holds.

Prince Michael Sigmaringen joins his sister-in-law, Caroline, and the vampire prince, Darius, in a daring rescue, igniting Rosa’s desire to find her family. However, all is not as it appears. Rickard, Rosa’s friend, escapes with her. Clement will go to any lengths to get Rosa and Rickard back.

At Darius’ fortress, Michael soon discovers Rickard is a new breed of werewolf – one who can control the change, and Clement hopes to exploit Rickard’s abilities.

Michael’s courage, strengths, and convictions will be tested like never before. Can Michael and Rosa find true happiness and the rid the lupine haunting of the Sigmaringens once and for all?

“Why would you want to stay? Clement kidnapped you.”

Disconcerted, she pointedly glanced away from his hard stare. What did he mean by kidnapped? Clement didn’t keep her behind bars and feed her only bread and water. Rosa could even go into Brasov to shop as long as Lucien or one of the bodyguards went with her.

“I’m going to take you back to your mother.”

Her head snapped toward his direction. Mother? Of course she had a mother — a family, even — only she had no recollection of them. So why did her body fill with warmth at the

mention of her mother by a man she hadn’t seen before, but was hauntingly familiar? She pursed her lips, torn by conflicting emotions.

“Caroline and Darius can’t keep this up. Now get dressed or I’ll dress you myself.”

“You’ll find me an unwilling subject.”

He drew in a deep breath and raked a hand through his thick ebony hair. “You are exasperating.”

“So I’ve been told.”

“By who?” His eyes narrowed.

His jaw clenched and his gaze darkened. Quick as a panther, he closed the distance

between them and grabbed her wrists, tugging her toward him. She pressed up against the length of his body. His muscles were hard and defined…and again, hauntingly familiar. His hazel eyes grew murky and he claimed her lips with a forceful kiss.

Her heart swelled in happiness and then anger took over. Who was he to kiss her like this? She struggled, but he crushed her to him, ravishing her mouth.

That nagging familiarity buzzed at the base of her skull. She should know this man. Despite her ignorance, her body sensed a knowledge of him she couldn’t explain. Her core warmed at his insistence. She struggled less.

Genre: Paranormal Romance / NA Fantasy

coverThe Greek gods never actually existed. Did they? Sophie Darrow finds she was wrong about that assumption when she’s pulled into the spirit realm, complete with an Underworld, on her first day at college. Adrian, the mysterious young man who brought her there, simply wants her to taste a pomegranate.

Soon, though she returns to her regular life, her mind begins exploding with dreams and memories of ancient times; of a love between two Greeks named Persephone and Hades. But lethal danger has always surrounded the immortals, and now that she’s tainted with the Underworld’s magic, that danger is drawing closer to Sophie.

Adrian, the modern-day Hades, has just introduced himself to Sophie (Persephone) by pulling her straight from her college campus into a spirit-world wilderness, and now tries to prove to her that he’s not going to hurt her, and has important things to tell her:

“I asked about you, in the—the place where the souls go. Here’s what I found. Watch this, then I’ll take you home, I promise.” He selected the video and held the phone out to her, his heart pounding.

Sophie took the phone, frowning, and tapped the screen to begin the video. Immediately she inhaled a quick breath.

“Hi, Sophie Sodapop,” said her grandfather, who’d been dead over a year. Adrian kept his distance rather than watching at her shoulder, but having filmed it himself and previewed it, he knew how it looked. Sophie’s grandpa smiled benevolently, but, like all the souls, glowed greenish and appeared translucent. Behind him milled other souls in the fields. The black of the cave’s interior surrounded them all.

Adrian felt uneasy bringing photos or videos of the Underworld out of its borders, even into the rest of the spirit realm, but he had to convince her.

“This fellow here tells me it’s September of 2012,” her grandfather continued on the video, “and you’re about to start college. Sounds like you chose OSU. Honey, I’m so proud.”

Sophie choked back a sob, and splayed her fingers over her mouth. She kept her gaze riveted to the video. Adrian bowed his head, closing his eyes for a moment. Why was he doing this to her? Why couldn’t he leave her alone? Well, he knew why. But couldn’t he have found a gentler way?

“I miss you and Liam and your dad and mom,” her grandfather went on, “but it’s not so bad here. There’s all kinds of interesting folks to talk to. I even found some old friends. Now, this boy says he can bring you here to see me, if you’re willing. Sophie, I’d sure love that. I wouldn’t be able to touch you, but it’d be a real treat to talk to you again. I hope you’ll come. In the meantime, I love you so much, honey, and you take care of yourself.”

The video ended.

Tears ran down her face. She handed the phone back to Adrian, holding her arm out to the side and not looking at him.

He took the phone, and handed her a clean cotton handkerchief from his front pocket.

She accepted it, and blew her nose.

“I’m sorry,” Adrian said, then found himself talking rapidly, saying things he hadn’t entirely planned to say: “When I was a kid, my mum died. Suddenly. In a routine surgery, one of those complications that isn’t supposed to happen but sometimes does. And when I first went to the…that place, and found her soul, I…was really shaken.” Was crying too hard to talk would sound maudlin, he decided, although it was true. “Everyone feels that way. I mean, the few living people who’ve been there, and talked to their loved ones. It’s normal. But you do get used to it after a while.”

Sophie wiped her eyes. “I don’t know how you did the video. Or why.” Her voice sounded shakier than ever now. “But I want to go home.”

mediakit_bookcover_twilightovermoldaviaRomanian unification is on the horizon and the spirited Crown Princess of Carpathia, Caroline, would prefer to ride horses and archery to embroidery and dancing. Complicating her life is her recent discovery that she’s a witch.

Prince Stefan Sigmaringen travels to Carpathia to meet Caroline. He discovers he has much in common with her. He also learns that a strange man, Timon, has an unnatural interest in him.

Upon Stefan’s engagement, he overhears his mother confessing to a horrible secret – she cursed him in order to conceive him and Stefan will become a werewolf when he turns eighteen. There is a condition to overcome the curse, but it will require Stefan to draw on all his inner strength and Caroline, her courage. Can they break the foul enchantment and secure their future or will Stefan give himself over to the lupine curse that haunts his family?

Stefan went down on one knee. “Caroline, will you marry me?”

“Yes, I will.”

Loud applause broke out.

Stefan reached into his pocket and withdrew a ring. Caroline gasped. A diamond surrounded by aquamarines. “It’s beautiful.”

He smiled and slid it onto her finger. Caroline sensed conflicting emotions within him. Happiness clashed with apprehension, and she shared those emotions. Their night of happiness had been tempered by danger.

Father Nicholai, the Orthodox priest, stepped forward and placed Caroline’s hand in Stefan’s. Then he made the sign of the Orthodox cross over them.

“May God bless you and watch over you as you begin your life together. You have the church’s blessing to marry. Love is patient. It is kind, gentle, and all-knowing. Nurture such feelings in your hearts, and your marriage will be satisfying and fruitful. In the Lord’s name, I bless you. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”

Stefan and Caroline made the sign of the Orthodox cross, and the guests did the same. Everyone raised their voices and said, “Amen.”

“Wine for all!” Mihai said. “I have a toast!”

Waiters passed red wine to everyone and gave Stefan and Caroline a set of gold goblets. Mihai raised his glass. “A toast — norco — to the engaged couple. May you find true happiness like Theresa and I have found, and as Mircea and Aurora have found as well.”

Everyone raised their glasses. Stefan clinked Caroline’s glass and took a long sip. Caroline barely had her lips to the goblet when she detected a foul smell coming from it. Her stomach clenched. He gagged, the wine splashed a little on his jacket, and he collapsed on the ground, choking.

“Stefan!” Caroline fell to her knees next to him, and placed her glass next to her. Mihai raced to Stefan’s side, wrapped his arms around Stefan, and raised him up. Michael joined them. Gasps of concern filled the room. Caroline glanced at Stefan’s mother. Her hands covered her mouth, and terror filled her eyes. Caroline’s father rushed to her side.

Stefan’s eyes snapped open. They were yellow. His cheeks narrowed, and his teeth, sharp and pointed, hung over his lower lip. Then he relaxed and slumped in his father’s arms.
