Book Excerpt

The girls walk slowly inside the Crystal Palace. It’s hard not to be distracted by the magnificence, but Lizzie, McKenzie, and Lucia do their best to stay focused. As they proceed to walk inside the place of the palace they see the Mimics, and standing behind them is the Same Glam Goddess.

“Thanks, Twinkle Toes, for that lovely performance earlier. You made getting the crystal that much easier,” says the Same Glam Goddess, laughing at McKenzie.

Lizzie and Lucia each put a hand on McKenzie’s shoulder and give her a tender smile.

“Pick on someone your own age!” Lizzie shouts.

The Same Glam Goddess gives a bold, piercing look and says, “Mimics, take care of them. Their presence offends me.”

The Mimics take out their beauty blasters. McKenzie, Lizzie, and Lucia take out their wands, fire off some darts, and hide behind a display.

A dart hits one of the Mimics square in the back. “Ow!” cries the Mimic. As she tries to nurse the wound in her back, the crystal falls to the ground.

The Same Glam Goddess clenches her fists and shouts, “You fool!”

Lizzie, McKenzie, and Lucia clutch hands and call out, “We know who you are, and we know what you do. You can’t make us the same. Princess Lovina, we need you.”

A golden light comes from the sky and begins to fill the Crystal Palace with rainbow colors.  Princess Lovina appears alongside Lizzie, McKenzie, and Lucia. Calmly, she says to the Same Glam Goddess, “Why are you doing this? You weren’t always this way. I remember when you were nice.”

The Same Glam Goddess clutches the Friendship Freeze Ray for dear life. “Maybe we were friends, but that was long ago.” A hurt expression covers her face. “Piggy Princess they called me, because of my flat nose. It may not have been you, Princess Lovina, but that does not matter. Now, I am fierce and everyone fears me. Those days are over!” shrieks the Same Glam Goddess as she aims the Friendship Freeze Ray at them.

Princess Lovina turns to the girls and says, “Let’s take care of her together!” Princess Lovina uses her Same Silencer, and Lucia, Lizzie, and McKenzie fire their wands.

Whoosh! An army of colors surrounds their frightful foe.

The Same Glam Goddess reacts swiftly. “You won’t get me this time. Mimics, disperse!” she says, vanishing into hazy air.

BLURB:

In the mystical realm of the Cavern, Akarra is Shardshaper to the quartzian people who inhabit it. Fashioned from quartz and filled with enchanted light, the quartzians are a strong and hearty people. Akarra is no exception. But when destiny intervenes, she must choose between the he-quartz she loves and the life path she lives for. Which shall she choose?

Excerpt:

Akarra knelt expectantly on the floor near the back corner of Yridia’s Cave.

“Pattern matching is most important, dear,” Yridia said.

“I know, Mistress Shardshaper,” Akarra replied, head bowed in deference. “You’ve told me so—many times—but I just don’t see the use of geometry.” She was tired; it had been a long training session and she still wasn’t through.

The small but cozy cave—one in which she had spent many long hours engaged in study—had been hollowed out in the shape of a twelve-sided figure of exquisite design—a dodecahedron, it was called. It at once conveyed a sense of space, mystery, and power. Much like the element it represented: the ether. Each of the twelve faces of the shape formed a perfect pentagon—a five sided figure of further significance and meaning. The pentagon-shaped floor, of course, was made of clouded white quartz; the ceiling, clear. The pentagons on the walls alternated between white and clear. There were no cracks or fissures or blemishes; all the angles and divisions were neat, clean, and precise, thus regulating the temperature of the room perfectly. As Akarra perused the features of the cave, she felt contentment and peace, and her antennae glowed a pale greenish yellow in response. This was like a second home for her. She was the apprentice Shardshaper. One of the most respected members of the tribe.

Akarra watched Yridia move to the center of the pentagon floor and squat down in front of her. Yridai’s yenshi robe billowed out and she produced a crystal of transparent blue quartz in the shape of a perfect tetrahedron. Her Heartshard. A piece of the Heart Crystal itself, the source of the Shardshaper’s power.

Akarra could feel the Shard’s presence.

Guest Post & Giveaway: Alchemiya by Katey Hawthorne

Guest Post by Katey Hawthorne

Katey HawthorneHello, and thank you so much for having me at Bright Street Books, Deborah.

I’m here to talk about my latest release, a historical fantasy/paranormal romance called ALCHEMIYA. The hero is a young woman named Eugenia Ratna who’s frustrated daily by the Regency-esque social mores of her time and country, and her love interest is Olivia Plumtree—who’s been masquerading as “Lord Oliver Plumtree” for most of her life.

In their country of Chrysopoeia, nobility doesn’t come from your land-ownership, your money, or your name. The Ratna family emigrated to Chrysopoeia generations ago when a Call went out, inviting alchemists from all over the world to settle in Chrysopoeia and create a new society where those with alchemical knowledge would be the leaders and protectors of society—the noble class.

So from a writer’s point of view, why alchemy? Of all the forms of power it’s possible to build a fresh, new world around—magic, money, telepathy—why that one?

Partly, it’s just because I like it. Alchemy has this cloak of mystery around it that I’ve been curious about since I was a kid reading encyclopedia entries about everything new and interesting I could find. Plus, alchemy has roots in so many different traditions in our world, from China to Portugal to Mexico and everything in between, it made sense when looking to write a fantasy with a diverse cast of characters.

But I think the clinching argument came with the dual nature of alchemy in most texts. It wasn’t just about transfiguring base metals into gold or even creating healing potions, though those were and are certainly still important in alchemical practice. It’s also about transfiguring the soul, about reaching a higher plane of understanding, and that’s a recurring theme throughout the scholarship. Some people doubt it was ever really about turning lead into gold, and that it’s all just a big metaphor people took too literally.

There’s a lot to run with in that, as a writer, and I can’t wait to expand on it more as the Alchemiya stories progress. I mean, I’m also there for the hot romance, but that’s its own kind of alchemy, after all.

Book Description

Eugenia was born to privilege in the Ratna clan, nobility famed for their alchemical jewel production. Eugenia’s a talented alchemist herself-but the patriarchy insists her less able brother is the heir to the family secrets and property. As if that weren’t insult enough, an accidentally public tryst with another woman means Genie is shunned by polite society altogether.

Enter the gorgeous Lord Oliver Plumtree, scion of one of the oldest alchemical families in Chrysopoeia and master of the foreboding Waldgrave Abbey. But Lord Oliver is actually Olivia, and on the lookout for a wife-one who requires an escape from the same crushing social mores that have forced Olivia to masquerade as her own long-dead brother to keep her family’s estate intact.

Genie and Liv seem a perfect match from the get-go, and things heat up quickly between them. But before they can carry off their marriage of convenience, Waldgrave Abbey reveals more secrets. Jealous Plumtree relatives and Liv’s association with the Secret Society of Alchemiya, rumored to be a dark and sinister arm of the patriarchy, might just ruin Genie and Liv’s chance at their unlikely happily ever after.

kateyhawthorne_alchemiyaExcerpt

“Lady Ratna, I think?” a mellow voice asked just over Eugenia’s shoulder.

She turned slowly, amazed that anyone in this crowd, all of whom had heretofore ignored her presence completely, would deign to speak to her. She was even more amazed that the delicate, rather prettily handsome, fresh-faced young man who addressed her was not already of her acquaintance.

Speaking to a lady without an introduction? Eugenia wondered if she’d like him or hate him. She’d lay odds on the latter, but tonight had been…surprising.

“Yes?” she asked, careful to show no interest.

He made a casual, almost flippant bow. “Oliver Plumtree, your servant. Forgive me for introducing myself, my lady, but I admit I was hoping to find you here.”

“You amaze me,” she said, since she kept thinking it over and over. She took a sip to compose herself, concentrating on the play of the bubbles and the tartness of the wine on her tongue. When she felt sufficiently herself again, she added, “I was so looking forward to an evening of being invisible, too.”

“In that dress?” Oliver Plumtree’s eyebrows, thin, pale, and finely arched, rose. “Hardly.”

“Ah, so you hoped to find me here so you could flatter me. How original.” Eugenia was almost sorry the moment it was out of her mouth; damn Delaney for putting her in a sour mood. She took another, longer drink.

Plumtree only laughed, though. “Partly, I think. I apologize for interrupting your evening of invisibility, though. And they say infamy has nothing to recommend it.”

She blinked to hear someone-someone so obviously genteel-openly comment on her reputation. It was…odd but refreshing. “Would you like to be invisible too, Mr. Plumtree?”

“Dearly.”

“In that jacket?”

The Ever Fiend

Excerpt

Suddenly freed, Talon squeezed his sword, flexed his limbs, and weighed some options. Quick as he was, no sword could fly faster than words. And while the taller shadow was likely the wizard, he had no idea to whom or what the other shadow belonged, and had to know before launching an attack. Besides, he could hardly assess his foes with his back to them. He slowly turned around, a scowl on his face.

A black-robed, balding man stood beside the empty pedestal, a reassuring smile on his swarthy face. Perhaps he was a Marulan from across the Antaran Sea. But Marulans were thought to be mostly savages, their skins as black as their deeds, and not wizards with an air of sophistication and opulence. The man did not have an accent that Talon could hear. The long face, nose, and limbs matched what Talon had heard from stories. The dark eyes of Viland Shadowbreaker observed him coolly.

Book Spotlight: A Most Unfortunate Prince by Kelli A Wilkins

A Most Unfortunate Princeby Kelli A. Wilkins

Hi everyone,

Today I’m sharing an inside look and spotlighting the making of my historical/fantasy romance, A Most Unfortunate Prince. This book is the third story in the Royal Desires trilogy that began with A Most Unusual Princess and A Most Intriguing Temptation. Together, they make up a fun series, but each story stands alone as a separate read. Why? Because when I wrote A Most Unusual Princess, I never knew I was writing a trilogy.

When I wrote A Most Intriguing Temptation, I introduced readers to Prince Allan. He’s basically the male version of his sister, Princess Elara – hedonistic, selfish, and utterly wild at times. I enjoyed creating the character and it was fun to set him free in a pleasure palace completely without limitations. As I was finishing A Most Intriguing Temptation, I realized Allan needed a book of his own, so I wrote A Most Unfortunate Prince. (Several readers also asked me if Allan’s story would be told, and I was happy to oblige!)

But before I wrote a word, I knew that Allan was going to have to face the music for his bad behavior. At the start of the book (yes, right there on page 1) Allan is banished for his actions stemming from A Most Intriguing Temptation. His father kicks him out into the real world alone and broke, and he’s forced to make his own way in life.

I decided to take this carefree, roguish prince and turn his world upside down. I asked myself: How bad can you make things for him? He has nothing: no food, no fancy clothes, certainly no job skills, and no real sense of identity. He had lived a pampered life where everything was handed to him on a silver platter (literally), and now was in for a rude awakening. I really put the screws to poor Allan and at times left him broken, sad, and utterly miserable.

Over the course of the book, Allan suffers life’s lessons at the hands of his evil employer and falls in love—twice. The story introduces us to Claudette, a sassy seamstress who fancies Allan and helps him adjust to the life of a commoner. Although Claudette appears innocent, she has a secret past and a bit of a naughty side.

Although A Most Unfortunate Prince has a happy ending, it is a bit darker than the other two books in the series. I wanted to contrast Allan’s former easy-going pampered life with his current harsh and gritty existence. (And it broke my heart to kill off a secondary character that I utterly adored. But I found a way to bring him back—at least for a little while!) Readers may also be surprised to discover a few things about Allan, as well. (Even I was shocked when certain events in the story took place—and I was the one writing it!)

Allan’s “fall from grace” and the journey of self-discovery that he undergoes are some of the reasons I love this book. It has something for everyone: hot love scenes, tender moments, mystery, adventure, and suspense.

But what about Dalton and Elara (from A Most Unusual Princess and A Most Intriguing Temptation)? They’re in the book too, as minor characters. Elara and Dalton play important roles in the finale of the story, and we get to see how these lovebirds are adapting to their married life. (Again, there’s a secret I don’t want to give away!) I can tell you that this book wraps up the trilogy in a neat package and everyone is left in a good place.

Here’s the book summary and a tame excerpt:

A Most Unfortunate Prince

This time, it’s all about Allan… and he never expected to fall in love!

Banished by the Royal Family, pampered Prince Allan is forced to abandon his life of luxury. The former Royal Shipmaster General is sent to the worst part of the kingdom and manages to find work at the docks. Lost in a commoner’s world, Allan is miserable—until he has an unusual encounter with a saucy shop girl named Claudette.

Allan must earn the respect of the woman he loves while keeping his true identity a secret. In an effort to redeem himself in his father’s eyes, he exposes a dangerous smuggling operation involving the Royal Fleet. But his loyalty to duty comes with a deadly price.

Can he keep Claudette and his royal title? Or will he lose her forever when she discovers his secret?

 The Excerpt:

Claudette squealed and Allan drew her to him, crushing her against his chest. They were crammed into the wardrobe so close that Allan’s hot breath tickled her face. He draped her arms around his neck, then settled his hands on her waist. At first, she tried to protest, but then gave in when she realized her knees were shaking. Allan was here for her, holding her up.

“Shh, don’t make a sound, no matter what. I won’t let them hurt you,” he whispered.

She closed her eyes and rested her head on Allan’s shoulder. Thank heavens he was here. A second later, she heard the man rifling through drawers and cupboards, knocking cleaning supplies and her sewing aside. How did these men get in? What did they want?

Allan tightened his grip on her waist. Was he scared? Did men ever get scared?

“Bloody hell, where is it?” the man growled, and hit the side of the wardrobe.

Her heart skipped a beat and she took a breath to scream. As she did, Allan’s mouth closed over hers. She squirmed against him, then gave in as her body responded with a will of its own.

Her skin tingled as she kissed him, her lips eagerly seeking his. How long had it been since she’d kissed someone? She opened her mouth wider and drew Allan’s thick tongue in. He clutched her tighter as she twirled her tongue around his.

All thoughts of the intruders vanished from her mind as Allan yanked her lower body closer to his. His hot tongue teased hers and he slid his hands off her waist and cupped her buttocks…

Book Spotlight: Arcanus Amator by Elyzabeth M. VaLey

Arcanus Amator by +Elyzabeth M. VaLey
Genre: Fantasy, Erotic, Romance on the Go

As an Arcánús, one of Cupid’s blessed children, Amandeus’s mission in life was to aid his father in bestowing love upon others. Unfortunately, when he found his own soul mate he was incapable of making her perceive their connection. Furthermore, she doomed their love forever. Amandeus’s only hope is a spell concocted by Cupid: The Arcánús Amator: Spell of the Secret Lovers.

Hailey is desperate for love. She’s so desperate that when she finds a spell on the internet that promises to connect soul mates, she decides she must try it. Convincing her friend Hannah to help her, the girls embark on a one-night craze that will produce life-changing results and bring to life what was thought to be only a myth.

My review of Arcanus Amator

What happens when soul mates are parted, possibly never to be united? Cupid’s son, Amandeus finds out when his soul mate, a powerful witch, is unable to recognize their love and they’re pitted against each other in battle.

Fast forward to the present day where Hailey uses a spell to connect soul mates, and she gets a lot more than she bargained for. A quick read that uses mythology to create a sexy modern day story. I wouldn’t have minded if there were more details about Amadeus’ adventures between the time of the battle and when the modern day story begins. There’s an interesting story world here that could be explored more fully.
-Deborah

She frowned. “What the hell’s happened?” She was quite sure this was not how the spell worked. Granted, she hadn’t exactly read the entire information sheet on the website.

“No one does,” she whined, bouncing on the balls of her feet while staring at the flickering flame of the candle. The thing was more than 20 pages long. It was like reading one of those software agreements. No one read the damn thing. She’d read the instructions and the first page with all the warnings and that was more than enough. Taking a deep breath, she managed to settle her nerves a little. Everyone thought she was the ditsy blonde obsessed with the occult, but she wasn’t. She was a hard worker, impatient when things didn’t go as expected. It was partially the reason why she’d filed through so many relationships. Why stay with a guy when he clearly had nothing to offer? Some of her friends argued that she didn’t give them a chance. She begged to differ. She’d given them a chance, they just hadn’t taken it.

True, her impatience sometimes got her into some trouble but it also saved her from a lot of it. That, however, wasn’t the case now. Annoyed that the spell had gone awry, she brushed back her bangs impatiently. Whatever had happened was not important. The priority was getting Hannah back home. Scanning the room for her discarded laptop, she did a double take.

Obstructing the exit to the living room stood the most gorgeous man she had laid eyes on. He was massive. His head almost brushed the top of the doorframe. His heavily muscled arms were crossed in front of him, his chest bare except for the intricate design of a red-inked tattoo that started around his left nipple and descended across his side to his hip. Low on his hips, he wore a long black skirt made out of what looked like leather.

Hailey hesitated a moment before finally glancing fully at his face. Her breath stilled as their eyes locked. A clear shade of violet, they were not from this world. Swallowing, she took a step backwards without breaking her stare. The stranger’s eyes glittered with curiosity and amusement.

“Careful with the center of the star,” he warned.

Hailey stumbled and froze. His voice was deep and commanding and had a familiar ring to it that sent her senses reeling. Shaking her head slightly, she continued moving away from him.

“Watch—”

Breath exploded from her lungs as she crashed into a shelf, a few ornaments she and Hannah kept, crashing to the floor.

“—out. Are you all right?”

Hailey winced, the back of the shelf digging into her skin, but she nodded anyway. The stranger flashed her a grin that made her knees weak. Hailey swallowed. The urge to see him smile again clawed at her insides like a desperate hunger.

Ignoring her, he glanced down at the pentagram, his silky dark curls framing his strong jaw and straight nose.

“You don’t look like you knew what you were getting into.”

Hailey held on to the bookcase behind her. She was afraid that if she moved the whole thing would topple over her head and she’d wake up, realizing that the man in the center of the room was nothing more than a dream.

“Read the first page of the instructions and didn’t bother to read the rest, huh?”

His eyes lifted to hers with a sassy smirk that lit up his violet eyes. Hailey stared speechless, the urge to touch the man making her palms itch as if she’d stepped into poison ivy.

“Yeah, you never did care what you got into, Ariadne.”

Goose bumps sprouted over her flesh and she released the shelf, rubbing her arms in an attempt to warm her suddenly chilled skin. Ariadne. The name rang in her ears like a long forgotten memory always running at the edge of her vision, just a breadth away from her grasp.

“I—”

Defined as weird since she was about eight, Elyzabeth honors the title by making up songs about her chores, doodling stars and flowers on any blank sheet of paper and talking to her dog whenever he feigns interest.
