New Release: Cloak & Dagger by Michel Lee King

About the Book

Title: Cloak & Dagger

Author: Michel Lee King

Genre: Fantasy

A demonic howl rips through the air. Panicked voices call out. Women race through the fields to the sanctuary of their walled village. The wolf howls again. Men barricade the entrance, daughters are wrapped in the protective arms of their mothers. Sons race to assist their fathers.

It is a scene I’ve seen many times. Heard many times. Caused many times. Their fear does nothing for me. I’m not here for them. I am here for the one they harbor, the one they protect. The harpy in maiden’s clothing. I am here for the one who changed me.

She stole my life, my husband, my future, my sanity. Now with the wolf inside I will find her. I will shred her. That harpy will never fly again.

My name is Ashleigh. I am the big bad wolf. And I am here for Rosamund.

Author Bio

I drink copious amounts of coffee while writing light and dark fiction. It is an obsession of mine (both coffee and writing). I love to create different world people can delve into. Whether set in our world or a fantasy, I love to push my characters through experiences that most of us can relate to. We’ve all been embarrassed by our own actions. We’ve all had those moments you wish you could take back. We’ve all had the “naked on the first day of school” dream. Our idiosyncrasies are what make us human. And, I love to force those traits on my characters to see how they cope with them.

I live in western Washington state in the shadow of Mount Rainier with my husband, son, dog, and the cat that adopted us and refuses to leave. When not writing, I can be found in a library, in the woods, or reading next to the fire.

I am a raging introvert, but I can be found on social media through:

Book Spotlight: Dragon’s Treasure by Maya Starling

Title: Dragon’s Treasure

Author: Maya Starling

Genre: NA Fantasy

“She was the girl who longed for the freedom of the dragon, and he was the dragon who longed to be a man.”

A heroine reclaiming her fate. A dragon with a secret. A prince on a quest.

Olivia flees to the forest seeking freedom from her family’s demands. She finds refuge in a cave, only to discover it is a dragon’s lair. The dragon, Kaden, is not the monster she first thinks him to be. After overcoming her initial fright – of not being eaten – Olivia discovers that the dragon has a gentle heart.

Kaden is resigned to loneliness after centuries of wandering the lands. Meeting Olivia brings joy to his solitary life, and never has he dreamed that a young woman would be the one to start the change in him.

A storm brews on the horizon.

A prince with a handsome face and a cruel heart is on a quest to slay the dragon, and take the throne. He will do whatever it takes to have what he believes is his to own. And now, he has his eyes set on the pretty little maiden from the forest. He will make her his Queen, whether she wants it or not.

Excerpt

Dragon's Treasure by Maya StarlingPride swelled within Kaden, lifting away the years of darkness that had consumed him as joy filled him for making her that happy. It was a wonderful feeling, after so long alone in the dark, to indulge someone else’s desires.

Olivia’s eyes had never been wider and she was sure her jaw was going to hurt for days because of how much she was smiling. She also didn’t care how many bugs she was going to swallow along the way.

Her heart pounded against her ribcage as fear, exhilarating fear, coursed through her veins mixed with a rush she had never felt before. She couldn’t put it into words; it was so much more exciting and liberating than the first time she went galloping on her own. So liberating. The world far beneath her feet.

Trees rushed by under them in a blur of greens, but as she squinted ahead, she was once again amazed by the view.

Looking at the treetops, Olivia thought that she could just reach down and brush her hands through the leaves, caressing the forest itself. All the green below them and the blue vastness above them made her realize just how big the world was, how tiny her role in it.

So this is what it feels like to fly. Right then, a new addiction bloomed inside her. She had to experience it again. Kaden would surely agree to such request.

Olivia wrapped the little bit of loose rope she had around her hand until it was taut as she sat upright, gazing all around them. She closed her eyes for a few moments and cherished the wind whipping at her face, the chill leaving a trail of gentle nips on her flushed cheeks. But she didn’t mind any of it. She feasted on it; it fed her mind and her soul, refreshing her spirit.

Opening her eyes, Olivia laughed out loud and a happy whoop escaped her lips.

Kaden veered to the left, circling around then flying back to their little clearing. As they glided above forest, the dragon spread his wings wide. He looked back at Olivia when her happy laughter reached his ears.

The healing balm of her being, her joy and innocence spread over his wounded soul.

Book Blast: The Woven Ring by M. D. Presley

mbb_tourbanner_thewovenring

GENRE: Fantasy

BLURB:

mediakit_bookcover_thewovenringA fantasy reimagining of the American Civil War that pits muskets against magic, massive war machines against mind readers, and glass sabers against soldiers in psychic exoskeletons.

In exile since the civil war, former spy and turncoat Marta Childress wants to quietly live out her remaining days in the West. But then her manipulative brother arrives with one final mission: Transport the daughter of a hated inventor deep into the East. Forced to decide between safely delivering the girl and assassinating the inventor, Marta is torn between ensuring peace or sparking a second civil war.

Excerpt:

To her surprise Carmichael blinked uncomprehendingly at the name. It had been rattling around Marta’s head like a Breath in a bottle for the last three months, but to him it seemed meaningless. Then the corners of his mouth curled up, Carmichael finally remembering.

“This is about our older sister? I forgot about her entirely.”

His dismissal of her months of misery infuriated Marta all the more, the girl fighting harder against his grip. Her helplessness stoked her anger further, fanning it into blazing rage.

And with the rage came clarity, Marta suddenly aware of each Breath within her body. There were the usual three all humans were born with, one in the center of the chest to representing the Body, the second in the middle of the forehead for the Mind, and the third at the crown of the head signifying the Soul. But in that moment of clarity, Marta could feel a fourth Breath nestled deep in her chest next to the Body. Were she not so angry, she might have been surprised to find it, to feel it thrumming with its own frequency. It had a resonance, a musical identity all its own that only she could hear.

So she inhaled, filling that Breath with both her air and anger.

The fourth Breath stirred, summoned by Marta’s will and obeying on her exhale. Though its base remained firmly in her chest, she felt it elongate as it stretched through her throat and out towards her mouth. The appendage was entirely new to her, but it felt natural as she experienced each sensation through this fresh limb: the light scrape as it edged over her teeth, the sudden coolness of the air outside her body; the crunch of her brother’s bones as it collided with his nose.

GENRE: Fantasy

Description

mediakit_bookcover_prismIn the mystical realm of the Cavern, Akarra is Shardshaper to the quartzian people who inhabit it. Fashioned from quartz and filled with enchanted light, the quartzians are a strong and hearty people. Akarra is no exception. But when destiny intervenes, she must choose between the he-quartz she loves and the life path she lives for. Which shall she choose?

Excerpt

Yridia produced another crystal: a clump of cracked, twisted quartz. She placed it in front of Akarra and said, “I want you to shape this crystal into an icosahedron. Work quickly. Now, go.”

Akarra blanched: An icosahedron was the most complicated perfect solid known. It was a quasi-spherical shape consisting of twenty identical triangular sides. A correctly formed icosahedron would fit in a perfect sphere in such a way that every vertex of every triangle would just touch the inner surface of the sphere. Actually, that was true of all perfect solids.

Akarra lifted the Shard and pointed the flat face of one of its triangular faces towards the clump of crystal. She bowed her head in concentration, summoning the power of her will. Her mind reached into the Shard; she could sense the Bond it had made with Yridia. The Bond inhibited Akarra’s control of the Heartshard, but not entirely: she could still harness the power of the Shard, just at a less effective level. She did so, and the Shard began to glow in her hands. First it glowed red, pulsing with energy, temperature rising. Next, orange, and the temperature began to drop. Next, yellow and a flash of cold. The other colors followed in turn: green, blue, indigo, violet, and then finally, it went clear. She sensed the presence of deathlight, and saw it in her mind’s eye although her normal vision failed her. She discharged a thick beam of deathlight focused on the lump of crystal. Immediately, the crystal began to morph and ripple.

Book Spotlight: Crimson Fire by Mirren Hogan

crimsonfirebanner

Genre: Fantasy

Description:
crimsonfireMagic was the last thing on Tabia’s mind – until she discovered she could use it. When her father hands her over to the princess of a neighbouring country to pay his debts, she may have the chance to learn how to control her new abilities.

But her new mistress’ enemies have plans of their own. Caught up in a web of divided loyalties, coercion and betrayal, Tabia can trust no one.

Can Tabia find a way to regain her freedom and return home – or will the struggle cost her the ultimate price?

Excerpt:

The rain poured down in torrents, slanting at a steep angle and driving into the deck, sounding like a thousand hammers. Above the ship, lightning flashed across the black sky, accompanied by roll after deafening roll of thunder.

Tabia had read enough by then to know that some sorcerers had the ability to control the weather, or at least influence it, but every time she’d started to broach the subject with her mistress, her stomach had rebelled, sending her back to the railing. She considered attempting it on her own and though she didn’t relish the idea, she couldn’t help but try.

She hung on tightly to the railing, looked up at the sky, blinking through a bolt of lightning and began to stare. As with the chakleti, nothing happened for a long while. She’d decided it wasn’t going to when the sky started to glow like a sunset against the thunderheads.

The crew began to shout. Tabia didn’t need to look at them to know they were pointing at the clouds as they shifted, breaching overhead. A patch of blue sky visible in the centre.

She was doing it.

Tabia began to grin as the ship settled. The wind slowed to a stiff breeze. The temperature rose swiftly as the cloud split to reveal the sun. She followed them with her eyes, pushing them a mile from their anchorage.

The crew let out a resounding cheer and Tabia turned, triumphant, to face them. Until she heard a resounding crack echo across the ocean.

Whipping her head back, she watched the clouds disintegrate. The water within them gushed from the sky, hundreds of gallons raining a tumult on perhaps a quarter mile of sea in a circle around the ship.

The waves rose, slowly at first, before the force of the rain pushed them higher and faster, smashing them against the hull. The ship started to list dangerously to one side. Everything not nailed down slid down the deck to the opposite railing, including Tabia, who slammed painfully into the mast, bounced and slid the rest of the way as the waves threatened to engulf the ship.

Book Spotlight: The Blue Witch by Joni Parker

The Blue Witch by Joni Parker

Genre: Fantasy

*The Blue Witch and Spell Breaker (book 1) are free for Kindle today*

Description

Under the rule of King Arthur, Alex finds the mortal world far from what she’d imagined, and the mortals are less than hospitable.  Accused of being the “Blue Witch,” Alex is sentenced to die for treason and has been implicated in the mysterious death of one of Arthur’s noblemen by seemingly magical means.

With help from unexpected sources, she escapes and returns to Eledon, where civil unrest and the threat of war looms.  Alex resumes her responsibilities as Keeper of the Keys for the Council of Elders, but must execute a series of quests to prove her abilities to handle the magical Keys of Eledon.  But are her efforts enough to save the Elves from Civil War? And can she commute her own death sentence by finding the Holy Grail?

Excerpt

Alex lit a candle off a red ember in the fireplace and ran upstairs to the loft.  “Beren!  Beren, wake up!”  She shook him awake.  “You have to warn Lord Ellsworth about a traitor.  Someone set me up and it had to be an islander.  They were the only ones who knew I had blue hair in my ears.  I’ve been keeping them covered.”

“How did you get here?”

“I escaped with the Blue People and they took me to Rosella, the Sea Sprite of Avalon, where I found Tap, Lord Root’s nephew.  Lord Reginald came after us, but Rosella stopped him.”

“Tap who?  Rosella?”

“She’s a mermaid.  I didn’t think they existed, but she does.  Anyway, she killed him—Lord Reginald, that is, she turned him to stone, and then Tap told me I had to go back to Eledon—my grandmother’s sick, really sick—she’s dying.  We ran away before the soldiers found us.  Tell Lord Ellsworth I’m going to bring back the Holy Grail for him.  I think it’s somewhere in Eledon.  Oh, and by the way, thanks for coming to my defense.”  She ran down the stairs.

“Wait a minute!”  Beren held out his hand as she disappeared.  “What happened?”  He ran his hand through his hair and got out of bed, putting on his robe, cursing under his breath.

In her bedroom, Alex opened the wardrobe door and changed into her brown britches and a white muslin shirt.  Instantly, her disposition improved, but she took note that her old clothes were now much too big on her.  Around her right thigh, she strapped on her Elfin Blade and nodded.  But she took two additional notches on the belt than she used to, and it seemed heavier.

She opened a drawer and pulled out her knives.  One knife slid into each boot, and each wrist cuff held an assassin’s blade.  Then, she slipped on her brown leather vest and reached into the pocket where she found the gold knot she’d forgotten about.

The knot was the size of her hand with a hole in the middle, but made of pure gold.  Lord Governor Tyrone, her benefactor on Seaward Isle, gave it to her as a parting gift.  Engraved on the front was the Elf symbol for gold with a unicorn underneath it.  Maybe it could help Beren and Lila.

From the top of the wardrobe, she grabbed her sword, Challenger and strapped it on.  She pulled the blade out and stared at it for a second—it’d been months since she had done that, and it seemed like a stranger in her hand.  She sighed and returned it to its scabbard.  Strapping the sword belt around her waist, she tightened it as far as she could, but it was still loose.  Then she tied her cloak around her neck and picked up the gold knot.

Author Bio

The Blue Witch authorBorn in Chicago, Illinois, Joni’s a city-girl, raised in the heart of the city. So, when her first grade class took a field trip to the Museum of Science and Technology, she was fascinated by the chicken farm where there were live chickens and chicks hatching from eggs under a light.

Like the other students in class, she wrote a report, but hers was selected to be in the school newspaper. Her first published article!

Joni’s writing continued with short stories until the eighth grade in Phoenix, Arizona when she won second prize in a short story contest and an honorable mention for a poem. After that, she developed a writer’s block and couldn’t write another short story or poem for the next 45 years. Talk about a writer’s block! Now, it seems she can’t stop writing and has retired from work to write. “The Blue Witch” is her fifth published novel and the second book in “The Chronicles of Eledon” series.

Book Spotlight: A Most Intriguing Temptation by Kelli A Wilkins

A Most Intriguing Temptationby Kelli A. Wilkins

Hi everyone,

Today I’m sharing an inside look and spotlighting the making of my historical/fantasy romance, A Most Intriguing Temptation. This book is the second story in the Royal Desires trilogy that began with A Most Unusual Princess and ends with A Most Unfortunate Prince. Together, they make up a fun series, but each story stands alone as a separate read. Why? Because when I wrote A Most Unusual Princess, I never knew I was writing a trilogy.

A Most Intriguing Temptation focuses on the theme of fidelity. Our headstrong Princess Elara wants to test Dalton’s loyalty, so she masquerades as Oonish, a sultry kharim girl in a pleasure palace. She teases and tempts Dalton at every turn and thinks her game is all in fun—until she gets in over her head and lands in big trouble.

I enjoyed taking Elara out of her element and giving her new experiences. I also got to show a different side to Dalton’s character as he (and readers) learn about his weaknesses and desires. He loves Elara, and yet, Oonish is tempting… This unique storyline was an interesting way to showcase Dalton and Elara’s relationship, discuss their views on trust, and see how they interact and respond to challenges in their lives.

A Most Intriguing Temptation was fun to write. It has a little bit of everything: adventure, humor, sizzling love scenes, an element of danger, and even a drop of sadness. This book also introduces readers to Elara’s charming, womanizing, “bad-boy” brother, Prince Allan.

When readers ask me if I ever have characters who want to “run away” with a story, I always point to Allan. By the end of A Most Intriguing Temptation, I knew Allan needed his own story, and so A Most Unfortunate Prince was born! I’ll be sharing more about him in my next blog.

Here’s the book summary and a brief (tame) excerpt:

A Most Intriguing Temptation

After only four months of marriage to Princess Elara, Prince Dalton is sent to Emperor Salizar’s pleasure palace on business. Not wanting to be left behind, Elara risks her personal safety and sneaks along on the trip.

Aided by her mischievous brother, Prince Allan, she disguises herself as one of Salizar’s sultry kharim women and decides to test Dalton’s loyalty. Masquerading as Oonish, Elara goes out of her way to tempt Dalton at every turn. Despite Dalton’s resolve to resist the indulgent girls, he finds himself falling under the spell of the mysterious Oonish.

After nearly giving in to temptation, Dalton discovers Elara’s trickery and turns the tables on her, making her into his submissive playmate. Their fun and games are quickly shattered when Emperor Salizar learns about Elara’s deception. He holds the royals prisoner and condemns Elara to a fate worse than death.

Can Dalton save Elara before it’s too late, or will her prank bring about the end of their love?

Bonus! This e-book includes a sneak peek at the third book in the “Royal Desires” series: A MOST UNFORTUNATE PRINCE.

The Excerpt:
Dalton rolled over in his sleep. He heard bells jingling again. What was Oonish doing now? He’d told her to stay in the outer room. He opened his eyes. Oonish trotted around the foot of the bed. The room was dim and shadowy. How long had he been asleep?

“Good, you’re awake, Your Highness. I would not want you to miss anything.”

“Miss what?” he grumbled and tried to sit up. As he did, he realized that his arms were bent over his head. His wrists were tied to the wrought-iron headboard with long pink scarves.

“What is the meaning of this?” He moved his legs and found that his ankles were bound as well. “I order you to untie me, now.”

“Nay, Your Highness. You must stay here and be pleasured. It is my duty,” Oonish said as she unhooked her belt. Her scarves and bells fell to the carpet, revealing her tiny covering.

He looked away. What was she going to do? “I wish for you to–”

“You wish for this,” she said, turning her back to him and wiggling her buttocks.

He swallowed hard. Whether he wanted to admit it or not, Oonish was enticing…
