Book Blast & Giveaway: The Ever Fiend by Randy Ellefson

Book Blast The Ever Fiend

Randy will be awarding a $10 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour.

Book Description

Only a fool steals from a wizard.

Talon Stormbringer thought he knew the risk of stealing from Viland Shadowbreaker – until he got caught. The wizard will spare him if Talon performs a service – fetch the deadly silver elixir from the Everway, a supernatural land that Talon assumed wasn’t real. Only children believe the stories about what lies within – lost souls, corrupted magic items, and mysterious destinations that most people never escape. Ruling over it all is the Ever Fiend, a bogeyman that people use to scare unruly youngsters into behaving.

Talon agrees to go, if only to stop Viland from doing something unholy with the potent elixir once retrieved. Joining him are a band of people he can’t trust. Their leader, a sorelia with nefarious plans of his own. The sorelia’s battle-trained mynx, a large cat who obeys only its master. An alluring swordswoman who wants to enchant her blades with the elixir. A cocky guard whose bravado might prove more liability than asset. A warrior kryll whose curiosity about the elixir might cost him more than his life. And a tortured Knight of Coiryn who seeks redemption in a place where most are damned. Of all the things they might discover on their journey, one is the most obvious and yet the hardest to learn…

Only a fool steals from the Ever Fiend.

The Ever Fiend

Excerpt

Suddenly freed, Talon squeezed his sword, flexed his limbs, and weighed some options. Quick as he was, no sword could fly faster than words. And while the taller shadow was likely the wizard, he had no idea to whom or what the other shadow belonged, and had to know before launching an attack. Besides, he could hardly assess his foes with his back to them. He slowly turned around, a scowl on his face.

A black-robed, balding man stood beside the empty pedestal, a reassuring smile on his swarthy face. Perhaps he was a Marulan from across the Antaran Sea. But Marulans were thought to be mostly savages, their skins as black as their deeds, and not wizards with an air of sophistication and opulence. The man did not have an accent that Talon could hear. The long face, nose, and limbs matched what Talon had heard from stories. The dark eyes of Viland Shadowbreaker observed him coolly.

Excerpt

Dalir's Salvation by Nina CrespoColby jogged up the stairs wearing tennis shoes, shorts, and a sweatstained T-shirt. His damp blond hair clung to his forehead. “Wouldn’t go down there if I were you. They’re moving furniture out of the sunroom.”

“For what?”

“They’re changing the back wall into a built-in bookcase.” Why couldn’t they just read the damn books instead of turning everything fucking upside down? “Where’s Thane and Reid?”

“They made themselves scarce early this morning along with Mace and West.”

Of course they had. Thane and Reid had led the team to stop rebellions, disasters, even a super virus from destroying humankind, but they couldn’t control their fiancées. The flush spreading over him and supernatural energy expanded in equal proportions.

A buzz emitted from the light switch.

“Whoa. Chill.” Colby raised his hands. “You’ll fry the circuits again. No electricity will only prolong the agony. Just do like the rest of us and leave.”

“You’re still here.”

“Not for long. I’m on recon duty.”

At least someone was getting some real work done. “Do you have a lead on Kell?”

“Possibly. The police in New Jersey are looking for a slasher. The victims’ wounds may have been caused by a sword.”

Knots tightened in Dalir’s gut. Since his escape, Kell had killed a woman scientist, kidnapped Lauren, and tortured Reid. Those were the incidents they knew about. Was he responsible for these murders, too?

Book Excerpt & Giveaway: The Grotesques by Tia Reed

The Grostesques by Tia Reed

Tia will be awarding a $20 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour.

Genre: Urban Fantasy

Description

Discredited journalist Ella Jerome isn’t thrilled about working at Adelaide’s fanciful tabloid The Informer. So when zoologist Adam Lowell seeks her help in finding his missing cousin, she’s cynical of his claim a monster lurks near the Church of the Resurrection. The trouble is, solving the gruesome case could be her best shot at restoring her shredded reputation.

With her old instincts resurfacing, Ella combs the Port for clues. Experience tells her the only monsters are the human variety, and the bloodied stonemason certainly raises her suspicions. But when her investigation turns up everything from petrified remains to the headless carving of a dragon, the truth threatens to steal both her sanity and the man she’s falling for.

After all, gargoyles can’t be anything other than harmless stone. Or can they?

Excerpt

The Grostesques by Tia ReedElla slapped the snooze button on her alarm clock and buried her face in the pillow. A moment later the shrill ring of the telephone elicited a groan.

Her hand searched the cluttered bedside cabinet until it connected with her mobile. Turning over, she mumbled her name while wiping sleep-encrusted eyes, then immediately held the receiver away from her ear as the voice of Phil Waterman, senior editor at The Informer, barked down the line.

“Get out of bed. I need you to attend a press conference in half an hour. The police have just hauled another body from the Port River.”

“What?” Suddenly alert, Ella sat bolt upright.

“You heard me.”

Wincing in anticipation of Phil’s ear-splitting orders, she nestled the phone between her shoulder and ear and reached for the pen and pad that sat permanently between a lopsided lamp and an unfinished crime novel.

“You got details?” She flicked to a blank page.

“Of course I haven’t got any details, woman. You’re the journalist. Just get down there and report.” She could imagine him reclining in his chair, extended legs crossed in front of him, half-eaten cinnamon doughnut balanced on his beer belly.

“Who else is covering this?”

“I’m sending you.” She heard the slurp of a sucked finger.

“I’m not about to give you a vampire bat story.”

“Vampire bat? You got some lead I don’t know about?” His voice, though quieter, rasped suspiciously. “Last I heard the take was a killer shark.”

“Whatever, Phil. Look, you know I don’t do your sort of cover stories.”

“Yeah, but this is big, Jerome.” He adopted a confidential tone. “My reporters are sassy creative writers but they couldn’t look into a parking fine if the warden was waving it under their noses. You’re the best investigative reporter this state has, and I sure as hell want a scoop for The Informer.”

Ella sighed. “Phil, I might work for you, but I don’t want my name tagged to fantastical nonsense.” Even to her own ears she sounded tired, defeated. One day soon she was going to cave in and be done with clinging to whatever shreds of dignity she had left.

“Just get me the story. For Pete’s sake, woman, six girls missing, one with a severed torso and the latest…” He broke off. “Things could hardly get-”

“The latest what?” she interrupted.

“-more sensational than that.”

There was a pause as she waited vainly for an answer.

Tia Reed loves nothing better than burying her nose in a story of her own imagining, cuddling her bossy cat and rescuing chewed pillows from her hyperactive dog. She takes every opportunity to do all three when she is not teaching English as a second language. The latter has thrown her many interesting, sometimes hair-raising experiences, which she loves twisting into stories. She was born in Malta, but lives in Adelaide, Australia.

The Secret to a Powerful Author Brand | Kristen Lamb’s Blog

Branding is a hot topic these days. Should an author create a brand? Will it really help to sell more books? This post on Kristen Lamb’s blog answered those questions and more.

I studied the neuroscience behind branding. What made content go viral? Was there something about content that the human brain reacted to positively or negatively? Was all content equal?
