About the Book

Title: Path of a Novice: The Silvan Book 1

Author: R.K. Lander

Genre: Fantasy

PathOfANoviceA land at war, a failing king, a light in the forest …

Bel’arán, land of mortals, immortals, and those that dwell in between. The elven forest realm of Ea Uaré is threatened by ruthless Sand Lords seeking water, and the undead Deviants who crave the mindless destruction of elves.

The powerful Alpine lords strive to dominate the leaderless native Silvans through power games, leaving in their wake a bereft king, assailed by grief and a family unable to forgive him.

As the king drifts in endless sorrow, the forest people are loosing their identity. Discriminated and belittled, they are the warriors but the Alpine lords are their commanders – until a child is born to the Deep Woods – an elf with the face of an Alpine and the heart of a Silvan, an orphan whose only dream is to dare become a Silvan captain in a world dominated by Alpines – Fel’annár, Green Sun.

A born warrior, to his friends, Fel’annár becomes Hwind’atór, the Whirling Warrior, and together, they will step upon the path of a novice.

Adventure, hardship and self-discovery will mould the warrior he will become. But destiny will not be ignored, and Fel’annár is confronted with the truth of his own abilities and the mystery of his past, one shrouded in sorrow and intrigue – one that may change the course of history.

From child to novice warrior and beyond, Fel’annár is, The Silvan.

Excerpt

Fel’annár! Fer’dán!” bellowed Turion through the chaos.

This was it, and with a sideways glance and a determined nod at his fellow archer, they both shouldered their bows and jumped to the forest floor, swords already drawn.

Fel’annár faced a one-eyed Deviant with a hideous slit down the centre of its head, and had just enough time to wonder if that was its brain he could see oozing out of one side. It smiled, showing its yellow, decaying teeth and black tongue. Fel’annár screwed his face up in queasy disgust for its breath smelt of all things putrid, and as its slithery tongue came out to lick its cracked lips, it was all Fel’annár could do to stop the rising bile at the back of his throat from spewing out of his slack mouth.

With a dodge to the right, he brought his sword around and found the liver, lunging into it as he had been taught. The Deviant squealed like a spring pig, before pitching forward, dead.

Swivelling on his heels he faced his next opponent, a Deviant that was so tall it looked down on him with a vicious smile, its gloved hand shooting out to grab at his throat, a strange clicking sound coming from its mouth. Not fast enough though, for Fel’annár had drawn his sabre in his left hand and sliced at the black limb, severing it completely and then following it with his eyes as it flew to one side.

He almost panicked when the Deviant made no noise at all, as if the loss of its hand meant nothing – and it did not. He needed to distance himself from it and the only way was to flip backwards. When he landed, he took advantage of the surprised beast and sliced through its stubbed forearm, the second chunk of foetid limb falling to the ground with a thud. Fel’annár whipped his head from the useless flesh, back to the Deviant and still, it bore down on him and the novice’s eyes bulged in disbelief.

Bringing his sword up to protect himself from the black scimitar, his arms shuddered painfully under the sheer power behind the blow – he had to gain more distance. Swivelling on his heels, he side-twisted, and then turned once more, his sword gaining impetus until it found its mark and cut across the beast’s neck, watching in morbid fascination as the sharp edge opened skin and muscle, and then grated over the bone at the back. Its hideous head tipped backwards and dangled for a moment on leathery skin, before toppling to the floor with a ripping sound, closely followed by the frozen body that crashed to the ground in a cloud of dirt.

Book Spotlight & Giveaway: The Island Deception by Dan Koboldt

TourBanner_TheIslandDeception

Dan will be awarding a digital copy of the first book in the series The Rogue Retrieval to 3 randomly drawn winners via rafflecopter during the tour.

GENRE: Fantasy (Epic)

BLURB:

MediaKit_BookCover_TheIslandDeceptionWhat happens in Las Vegas stays in Las Vegas. But what happens after you step through a portal to another world, well…

For stage magician Quinn Bradley, he thought his time in Alissia was over. He’d done his job for the mysterious company CASE Global Enterprises, and now his name is finally on the marquee of one of the biggest Vegas casinos. And yet, for all the accolades, he definitely feels something is missing. He can create the most amazing illusions on Earth, but he’s also tasted true power. Real magic.

He misses it.

Luckily—or not—CASE Global is not done with him, and they want him to go back. The first time, he was tasked with finding a missing researcher. Now, though, he has another task:

Help take Richard Holt down.

It’s impossible to be in Vegas and not be a gambler. And while Quinn might not like his odds—a wyvern nearly ate him the last time he was in Alissia—if he plays his cards right, he might be able to aid his friends.

He also might learn how to use real magic himself.

Excerpt

The hiss of the pneumatic pistol surprised him, but not as much as the jab of pain in his midsection. He reached down and found something odd in his cummerbund — a narrow metallic cylinder about the size of his pinkie finger. The metal was cold to his touch.

He jerked it out. A numbness started to spread from his abdomen. “What the-”

“Are you all right, Mr. Bradley?” Reiser stepped forward to take Quinn’s arm in a vise-like grip. “It looks like you need to sit down. My limo’s just outside.”

Quinn tried to refuse, but now his tongue had gone numb, too. All he managed was a faint shake of the head, which the man ignored.

A second set of arms came into view. They were slimmer, more feminine, but locked around his other arm just as tightly. Quinn couldn’t even move his head up to look at her. He was limp as a rag doll while they half escorted, half carried him down a hall and toward the emergency exit.

Good, let them try that. The door had a silent alarm. Security would be all over them in about thirty seconds. A little surprising that they hadn’t intervened already, in fact. There had to be cameras back here. Surely the security feed would have shown what happened.

That’s when he remembered that Raptor Tech was a security company. The market leader, in fact. And the Bellagio never went in for anything but the best.

Oh, I hope I’m wrong about this.

About the Book

Title: Redfern

Author: Gary Tinnams

Genre: Science Fiction

Redfern Front Cover“Humans don’t project past their own frequency. It’s why you’re so isolated as a species. The beings of other frequencies can only witness what you build and feel what you destroy.”

Earth – Tomorrow – The Singularity:-

The machines have taken over and mankind is cast out.

Millennia later, the inhospitable planet of Redfern is in the process of being made habitable for the proposed rebirth of the entire human race. All is proceeding as planned until Enforcer, Ted Holloway, witnesses the unexpected appearance of a long dead and former friend – A man who can become invisible and immaterial, a man that can penetrate any and all security.

A man whose very existence should be impossible.

As Ted and his superior, Lisa Carmichael, investigate further, they face dangers and creatures that challenge their very concept of reality and also encounter the colony’s caretaker Machine Mind and the human Security Commissioner, both of whom have opposing and intricate agendas of their own.

For the true nature of Redfern is stranger and more deadly than anything Holloway or Carmichael can possibly imagine.

And it could change or destroy humanity forever…

Author Bio

GDTinnamsPhotoI have been reading and watching science fiction since I was old enough to watch Peter Davison walking around an unrealistic jungle set in Doctor Who. The first set of sci-fi books I ever read was The Tripods trilogy by John Christopher without ever having watched the resultant TV series. The Tripods were scary.

Over the years I’ve come to love a variety of science fiction and fantasy books from many different eras and so came to the conclusion that I wanted to create my own adventures, set in my own worlds, with characters that acted and felt like real people. My third novel ‘Redfern’ is an adventure story which poses question about alien first contact, artificial intelligence, the singularity and the continued survival of our species at any cost.

“If you love your science fiction on the cinematic side but also want big ideas, intelligently explored, look no further.”

GENRE: Romantic Suspense

BLURB:

Zafir Al-Nassar knows everything about Jade Van Everett. He’s studied the cases she’s worked for his family’s company and for the FBI. And it’s hard not to notice that she’s absolutely gorgeous. Teaming up for a routine security detail, Jade is desperate to prove herself and Zafir can’t help but admire her determination. But when their assignment turns deadly, it becomes difficult to stay focused on the job. Because although they were hired to protect a Morrocan royal from a trained assassin, Zafir also has every intention of keeping Jade safe and by his side. Forever.

EXCERPT:

MediaKit_BookCover_SheiksRescueShe turned around and walked past him.  Zafir watched her and really wished he hadn’t for his gaze couldn’t help but go down to her perky butt that…  That was twice he’d been caught by that part of her anatomy.  He needed to pull his gaze away, to take his thoughts from the soft, rounded… It took everything he had.

Curves.

He wrapped his palm around the back of his neck as if a stranglehold massage would stop his thoughts.  But his hand was only hurting his neck and doing nothing to stop the overwhelming awareness of her as a very attractive female.  He wasn’t sure what would help, but physical pain wasn’t doing it.  He dropped his hand.

He was unable to drag his eyes from her.  Her figure curved in all the right places.   He wanted to run his hands over her.  He wanted to do so much more.

He couldn’t.

He pushed the thoughts from his mind.  They had a case to solve and a client to protect.  He turned around, heading for the bedroom.  He knew she’d gotten information from Stan, but after what he’d learned, he thought it was time they both sat down and had a long talk with him.

“Damn!”

Jade turned from the kitchen window and as she did, he met the question in her eyes.  He stood in the doorway of their client’s room, his fists clenched, all thoughts of passion or attraction forgotten.

“He’s gone.”

MediaKit_AuthorPhoto_SheiksRescueThe Canadian prairies are my home and while the prairie landscape is blessed with beautiful blue skies, it also has four seasons that come on full throttle – especially winter and because of that I like to travel.  Often on those trips, stories are born.

In 2011 I won my city’s writing award, and was the first romance writer to do so since its inception.  In 2013 my romantic suspense was a semi-finalist in the Kindle Book Awards.  Published in historic romance and paranormal romance as well as romantic suspense, in February 2016, my first novel was published by Harlequin Intrigue.

There’s no lack of places to set a story as my imagination and the too long prairie winters may find me seeking adventure.  The memories of those worlds both near and far, the words of a stranger, the furtive look one man gives another, often become the catalyst for a suspenseful story with a deadly villain and an intrepid hero and heroine who must battle for their right to love or even their right to live.

When not dreaming of other stories, I can be found scouting out a garage sale or two, dusting off my roller blades or just thinking about the next adventure that may be miles away or in my own backyard.

Excerpt

Captain Edard deq Lungo really ought to know better than to propose that Lady Jordayne del Giordano not abase herself by entering the gentleman’s establishment. Really, did he think she was about to miss out on all the fun? When the ingenious scheme was her idea too! There was no limit to the cheek of these men. One would think their fathers raised them in patriarchal Verdaan instead of Myklaan.

“But dear Captain,” she said, placing a manicured hand on the brass latch. “It cannot be that bad. I do believe there are a host of other women inside.” And with that she pushed open the freshly painted door and entered into a haze of smoke and billowing silks, setting a dozen bells jingling in the process. Inside, elaborate settees piled with plump cushions of exotic design lined the walls, a delightful place to wait for the attentions of the escorts if one could reach them without becoming entangled in the swags.

“There is, I suppose, no dissuading you?” Matisse said, trying, but not too hard, to prevent a smile breaking across his face. She would bet her entire forearm of gold bangles his tanned complexion and golden-brown hair attracted the first seductress out of the internal door.

“None, dearest,” she replied, patting his arm. “So you had best see to my reputation before Captain deq Lungo feels compelled to defend my honour.”

“This can only enhance your reputation, Jordayne,” Matisse said, with a throaty laugh, “though I’m not sure our uncle will feel mine is unsullied.”

“Big sister will own up to it being all her idea. But do see to the Captain, there’s a good boy. He’s going to give the game away before it’s even afoot.”

The Captain’s scandalised expression, accentuated by the hard, angular lines of his cheek and jaw, was intensifying by the second. Surprising really, given he sported the odd grey hair. His men, Vae’oenka bless them, supposedly the finest in the palace guard, looked like children in a candy store who faced a spanking if they touched. And not a female yet in sight, herself excluded. That did rather need to be remedied. They could not expect their quarry to walk in on a room full of guards, who despite their neat civilian clothing looked every bit the trained soldier, and take the bait.

Tia Reed loves nothing better than burying her nose in a story of her own imagining, cuddling her bossy cat and rescuing chewed pillows from her hyperactive dog. She takes every opportunity to do all three when she is not teaching English as a second language. Her other hobbies usually take a back seat but include trying to tame her beast of a garden, hiking and travelling. The latter has thrown her many interesting, sometimes hair-raising experiences, which she loves twisting into stories. She was born in Malta, but lives in Adelaide, Australia.

Betrayed by a trusted mentor, Sylvie Imanthiya hides on the fringes of society, caring for half-fae orphans and trading her alchemical creations on the black market. She lives for the one night each season when she can see her dearest friend—a man whose destiny is far above hers.

King Taylan Ashkalabek knows better than to exchange halayda vows with a mortal. Even their friendship is a risk; love is an impossible dream. Then a brutal alchemical attack poisons his realm, unearthing a dark power within him—and leaving Sylvie with the ancient mark of Faerie’s savior.

Manifesting unpredictable abilities and aided by allies with their own secrets, Sylvie and Taylan journey into the wilds of Faerie to heal the damage and confront Casimir, an invincible star-fae determined to claim the realm as his own. But only their enemy knows Sylvie’s true capabilities—and Taylan’s weaknesses—and how to use them in his vicious schemes.

Her fate is life. His fate is death. With Faerie in the balance, Sylvie and Taylan must stand together before reality as they know it is destroyed.

Book Excerpt

Halayda Book CoverSylvie couldn’t hear her own scream over the roar of the explosion. Taylan’s fingers slipped from her grasp as the ground flew out from under her. For a horrible moment, she hung suspended in time and space. Then the pain of a thousand needles pierced her limbs as she crashed to the earth.

Taylan! Where was he? She struggled to rise as acrid mist filled her lungs and stung her eyes.

The mist…

Sylvie hastily unclasped her pouch and felt her way through the collection of small vials. The mist was alchemists’ work, smelling of a cocktail of ingredients that should never have been combined. But she had a potion that might neutralize it, if only she could find it.

Another blast knocked her to her knees, and the vials shattered in her hands. Sylvie gave a choked cry as their contents doused her face and bare arms, searing into her skin like acid. She crumpled to the ground as the pain overwhelmed her.

Help… someone had to help…

But there was only lightning and ash. And then, nothing.

Book Excerpt

It came to me gradually. In spatters and smudges. Like a Jackson Pollock painting. Splash here. Drip there. Seems accidental. You stand back and look. The horror of the furtive activity attacks you. My name should be Sabbah. Nobody ever said this within my earshot. It was a little niggling suspicion.  A faint whisper in my head. It grew and multiplied. Now it is a scream. I know it in my toes. I feel it in the frazzled ends of my hair. I never dared ask directly. It is as obvious as the sun in the sky. I should be sitting here, declaring to you proudly that my name means morning in Arabic. A name that implies light, brightness, the first call to prayer of the day and the cock-a-doodle-doo of a proud rooster breaking dawn. Since my sister’s name means night in our language, I have surmised my parents worried about the negative connotation that would be assigned to her in relation to me.  Imagine my parents introducing us to their friends:

And here are our daughters: Night and Day.

They are as different as light and darkness.

People might have sniggered at the too matchy matchy extremes.

“Oh you called your daughters Night and Morning,” those with comedic aspirations would have continued. “If you have a third daughter you should call her Noon.”

Instead I have this nothing name. It reeks relativity without embodying substance. My name is Thaniya.

Author Bio

My name is Elen. I am an Iraqi-Canadian. Please allow me to tell you a story of a curios event that happened to me. I was a perfectly happy computer programmer doing the nerdy stuff that computer programmers do. You know! Geeky stuff. Like the normal stuff that an Iraqi-Canadian would do if they worked as a computer programmer. When one day, out of nowhere, the inspiration to write hit me over the head. It came at me fast and furious and turned my life topsy turvy. I was always an avid reader. Ok I was a bookish geek. But the idea that I would try to write never even occurred to me, until the violent incident with the muse. Since then I have published a memoir called “Don’t Shoot! … I Have Another Story to Tell You“. Which Was followed by a novel called Graffiti Hack. That one tells the story of a hacker who installs lavish graphical designs on commercial websites. Imagine the trouble she gets in? Well I had to. I was writing the story, so I had to imagine every last bit. A third novel is on it way. I don’t know where all these ideas come from, they just pop in my head and I write them down. In addition to writing, I am a flamenco dancer, I enjoy painting and I love to cook. Somehow all these activities inspire each other.

I am a married mother of three, living in a pink house in Vancouver BC
Really I just love telling stories and I love listening to stories.

Ben grabbed the back of Felix’s coat and lunged at him. Felix turned on one heel and swung his arm out, holding Ben off like a child.

Ben struggled to break free. “What the hell is wrong with you? Why didn’t you stop her? She’s gonna die. I need to protect her.”

“This is the only way, Ben. Trust me.”

“She’s the one person I’ve cared about in a long, long time. Please, don’t let her die.”

Felix released him. “I don’t intend to. Now come on.”

Felix turned away and ran fast down the trail. His massive body moved nimble over the rugged ground. He looked like a giant, dark beast lunging toward its prey. Ben could only run after him. There was nothing else he could do.

They hadn’t run far when a deafening blast pushed them to the ground. The cabin exploded behind them in flames. Fire devoured old wood and metal, dancing upward toward the sky. The heat grabbed at them with fiery intensity. Ben could feel it burning his face and hands.

“Laura,” he whispered, stunned by the violence aimed at them. Their enemy was real. And he was here. Felix and Ben turned and both ran faster down the mountain, lunging down the trail, grabbing branches to push themselves along.

Felix had to be right. Please, let Felix be right.

Book Excerpt

Etienne watches me drinking from the calabash, my giant gourd. The libation to the spirits I pour onto the courtyard stones. My feet shift, spirits pass through me. I twirl in waves of motion, never breaking the rhythm of my dance. Breathing fast, I lift my body, spinning on my toes. He stands in the darkness near the doorway, passion in his moonlit eyes, not knowing that I see him. My wide skirt swirls above the candle circle. Watch me dance, my love, I whisper. Now my feet lift high and pound the stones like flying mallets, while candle flames lick my toes.

A tangle of bedclothes is spread across the four-poster in my boudoir. Only hours ago we rolled on that mattress, making the canopy rattle. He does love me, that I know. And he’s seen my talents with the magic. His devotion sends the voudou pumping through veins.

This café au lait woman, his octoroon mistress, dances full out. But soon my body will be melting, shrinking, and that he’s never seen. My spinning stops, my skirt ripples as I stand before my altar praying to the saints. My candles flicker. The power’s in me, and just like that I see the flames turn blue. My skin tightens, bristles. I’m sinking now. Breathe, breathe, I say to myself. I’m down, I’m down.

It’s too dark for Etienne to see what’s happening to me, but his eyes widen as my form changes in the shadows of the yard. He watches from the open doorway of my parlor and then rushes through onto the courtyard stones. He stands tall in his finely tailored suit. But the mist rises around me, so that I am hidden. At this moment I am changing, rising up on my haunches.

“Lalin,” he calls, “Lalin, where are you?”

I sit, still and elegant, and then lower my head to lick my midnight fur and wipe my whiskers with a paw. But Etienne stumbles in the mist, swaying in the darkness as he trips over my candles and falls on the stone floor. But magic makes him sleep, distorts his memory, and gives me time to find my answers.

I have much to learn this night when I travel in my feline shape. And this is how I know what happens in the back streets and secret hideaways in our New Orleans.
