Thanks for stopping by!
I’ve been a writer for most of my life. But I took a few twists and turns. Along the way, I’ve been a copywriter, a computer programmer, a business analyst, a systems analyst and a freelance writer. Whew!
In fact, I always compare my journey to Dorothy’s in “The Wizard of Oz.” Sometimes you have to wander a bit before you realize you had the answer from the beginning.
First, here’s my “official” author bio:
Deborah A Bailey’s Science Fiction & Paranormal Romance stories include suspense, a bit of mystery and a lot of romantic heat.
She’s the author of the “Hathor Legacy” Science Fiction Romance series and the “Family Pride” lion shapeshifter Paranormal Romance series. Her short stories have won awards from the Philadelphia Writers’ Conference and have been published in US1 Magazine and the Sun. They’re included in her short story collection, “Electric Dreams: Seven Futuristic Tales.”
In addition to her fiction work, she’s published three non-fiction books, “Think Like an Entrepreneur: Transforming Your Career and Taking Charge of Your Life,” “Think Like an Entrepreneur: What You Need to Consider Before You Write a Business Plan,” and “Secrets of a Great Resume.” Her articles have appeared in publications including Baseline magazine, Working World Magazine, More.com and CNN.com. She’s host of Women Entrepreneurs Radio™, a weekly podcast available on iTunes.
Now, here’s a bit of backstory…
After earning my B.A. degree in English from Douglass College (Rutgers U), I went into a career in fashion and retail, earning an A.A.S. in Advertising and Communications from the Fashion Institute of Technology.
I became a copywriter for a few years, then went into IT and made my leap into computer programming. But being a writer was never too far away for me, and eventually I decided to leave corporate and head back into writing.
A few years after leaving corporate (and becoming a freelancer and coach) I wrote and published my first non-fiction book. While I was writing articles and business documentation, I also wrote short stories. I’d managed to keep writing fiction while I was doing other things, and that eventually led me to completing my first novel.
I love writing, though for a long time I didn’t do it at all. After listening to all the discouraging voices that said, why write? You’ll never make money at it! Be practical!
So follow your heart. You may be led to many unexpected places, but you’ll discover that you were on the right path all along…and isn’t that the point? 🙂
