Giveaway: Win eBook copies of the book, and 3 $10 Amazon gift cards.

Genre: Romantic Suspense

One year.

It’s been one year since Agent Damian Trent left for Washington without a word.

One year since he’s seen her beautiful face.

One year since he’s heard his name on her lips.

He’s been recently called back to New York City on assignment, to catch a criminal who’s trying to infiltrate Sunset Reads. The last thing he expects is to work side by side with the woman he turned his back on.

Having her close is an unwanted distraction that he’s more than willing to ignore, if only she wasn’t so damn tempting.

Everything seems under control, until a night of feverish passion has him abandoning all thoughts of reason. Now, he will do everything in his power to get her back, and even more so to protect her.

Layla Reece wants nothing to do with the man who left her a year ago.

The man who took her heart with him, leaving her broken.

After a year of trying to forget Damian Trent, she is finally ready to move on.

But trying to forget him becomes a tedious task when he suddenly reappears in her life.

Although she fights to stay away, his magnetism is too strong and she finds herself giving into the deep timbre of his voice, and the strength and safety of his arms.

Staying away from Damian turns out to be futile, especially when his kisses consume her and his heart shatters the walls she spent so much time building.

Finding herself in danger, she now has to turn to the only man she trusts to keep her safe, but can she trust him enough to give him her heart once again?

Excerpt

Damian Trent was just as hot as he was daring, and as Layla Reece watched him that night, she slowly became interested in the man behind the mysterious, silver gaze. Lost in thought, she was interrupted by her best friend who handed her a drink.

“He is gorgeous,” Cristina Cruz said, the renowned romance author and wife to Sunset Reads’ CEO, William Jameson. They had recently married and were currently expecting their first child. They were probably one of the happiest and most in love couples Layla had ever seen. She could only hope she’d someday have what they did.

“Yes, I suppose he is,” Layla replied, intending to seem uninterested, but not succeeding in the least bit.

Cristina eyed her friend closely. “You should go talk to him.”

Layla shook her head, stealing a glance at Damian as he leaned against the wall and spoke to William. “No, he’s probably not interested anyway.”
Cristina looked over at him and her eyebrows shot up. She gently nudged Layla and said to her friend, “I doubt that very much.” She smiled and then walked away just as Damian Trent headed towards them.

Layla took a long sip of wine and watched him carefully over the rim of the glass as he crossed the room. He was tall and imposing. He moved like a swift panther, taking long strides that brought emphasis to the strong muscles in his thighs.

“So, you are Layla Reece?” His voice dripped of sensuality, evoking sinful thoughts of naked bodies tangling beneath cool sheets.
She nodded slowly, cautious of the man in front of her. “And you must be Damian Trent.”

He smiled, the gesture wrinkling the corner of his eyes, making him seem all the more rugged. His intense gaze caused a shiver to run through Layla.

“I’ve been wanting to come over and talk to you for quite some time. Well, ever since I saw you looking at me earlier.” A smile played on his lips.

Layla’s eyebrows shot up at his comment, “I didn’t realize I was making you feel uncomfortable… nor that I was being so obvious.” She muttered the last part.

Damian’s eyes darkened, turning a steely gray. “So you admit you were looking?”

“Well if you saw me, then there doesn’t seem to be a point in denying it.” She shrugged, holding his gaze for a moment.

Damian searched her face, intrigued by her delicate features and her boldness. At that moment he decided to take a chance. “Do you want to get out of here?”
She furrowed her eyebrows, giving him a questioning look.

Damian leaned in, keeping his voice low. “I just want to talk. I promise. But if we don’t disappear soon I fear we will unfortunately continue to be the center of attention.” He gestured to the room and as Layla looked around, sure enough, they had an audience. He turned back to her. “Meet me outside in ten?” he asked.
Layla licked her lips nervously and nodded slowly. “Okay,” she whispered.

Ten minutes later, and after evading her friends and saying hurried goodbyes, she managed to escape. Then she found herself seated in a black, Dodge Charger heading God knows where with a man she barely knew.

What is it about this man that draws me to him?

“You keep staring,” he stated, his eyes glued to the road.

Layla realized she was angled toward him in her seat, and forced herself to face forward. “Sorry. I don’t normally do things like this.” She bit her lower lip and turned to look out the window.

I’m not sure what the hell’s gotten over me, she wondered as they drove.
His lips curved into a slight smile. “I figured as much.”

He pulled over on the side of the road and parked the car. Layla spotted a small restaurant on the corner, and through the windows she could tell it was almost empty. Damian opened the door, and helped her out of the car. His hand was warm as it engulfed hers. He placed his other hand on the small of her back guiding her inside. His touch was light yet brought shivers down her spine. The intimacy of the small gesture surprised her.

They took a seat in a back booth where there was some semblance of privacy, and he slid in across from her.

He leaned in. The closeness of his silver gaze causing her to fidget.

“You’re cheeks are flushed,” he whispered, trailing a fingertip down her face. He didn’t understand why, but he wanted to touch her.

His touch kept Layla frozen in her seat, as very erotic images of what she suddenly wanted him to do to her body flashed through her mind. She quickly pulled back and called for the waiter, trying to put some distance between them before things went in a different direction entirely.

They both ordered a drink and sat back, carefully studying each other.

Damian had wanted to talk to the beautiful, green-eyed vixen from the first moment he saw her at William’s place. Her features were soft, with high cheek bones and full lips. She has a perfect sun kissed glow, and her skin seemed so soft that he immediately wanted to trail his hands down every curve of her body, just to satisfy his curiosity. She was tall and reached his chin when she stood next to him, but he liked her height, mostly because she had the longest, shapeliest legs he’d ever laid eyes on.

When he’d decided to approach her, he knew she wasn’t going to be a woman who’d be easily persuaded. Her direct approach showed openness and an innocence that captivated him. He suddenly wanted to be alone with her, to actually get to know her. The only problem with all this was that the more he talked to her, the more he wanted to delve into dangerous territory. Territory he knew was impossible for him to enter into.

Layla smiled. “I suppose you can’t talk about your job since it might be top secret,” she teased, trying to break the ice.

He smirked. “You’re not entirely wrong.”

“So what can you tell me about yourself, Agent Trent?” Her green eyes held his in anticipation.

He smiled wickedly and leaned in, bringing his face only inches away from hers. “What do you want to know, Miss Reece?”

Layla stared at those full, sensual lips, warmth spreading through her.

“Everything,” she replied breathlessly, her eyes widening when she realized she had spoken aloud.

An Inside Look at Lies, Love & Redemption (Part 2)

Lies, Love and Redemptionby Kelli A. Wilkins

Hi everyone,

Today I’m sharing part two of an “inside look” at the making of my new historical western romance, Lies, Love & Redemption. In the first blog, I talked about how the book came to be and discussed the research involved in writing a historical romance. Today, I’ll explore the characters and touch on another subject—realism.

The book opens with Sam, the hero, bleeding from gunshot wounds and stumbling across the prairie. He’s wondering if he is already dead and suffering in hell for what he has done in the past.

This gives readers initial insight into Sam. Right from the start, we know he has done something that he feels guilty about, and he is harboring secrets. We also see that Sam is stubborn and not the type of man to give up easily.

When readers meet Cassie in her store, they see that she works hard trying to make her store successful. But they also see her going through the motions and wondering why she bothers.

Each character is at a cross-roads, and everything is about to change for them. As the book progresses, we learn that Cassie is headstrong, stubborn, and not the type to take guff from Sam or the people in town. She’s running a store all by herself and doesn’t like to accept help or rely on anyone.

I contrasted Cassie’s independent nature with a secret vulnerability. The consequences of a failed relationship left Cassie emotionally fragile and broken. She says she’s not afraid of anything, but later we learn that’s not true. Deep down, she fears losing the store. She’s also afraid of falling in love with Sam, only to lose him. Cassie has experienced many losses in her life, and she is hesitant to open her heart and trust anyone.

Sam is a noble man who feels he has a debt to pay and a duty to watch over Cassie, and this leads to conflict between them. She doesn’t want to admit that she needs his help, and he is being overprotective of her (or so she thinks…).

Although Sam comes across as honest and open, readers quickly discover that Sam is keeping his past a secret and is hiding his true identity—and much more—from everyone. Sam is a troubled soul who has also experienced a lot of loss in his life. Without giving too much away, readers learn that Sam lost someone very important to him through an act of violence, and he’s set on getting his revenge—and that’s not pretty.

This leads me to my next topic—realism. Before I sat down to write, I did a lot of research about general stores, what life was like in the 1870s, etc., and I learned that life back then was very difficult and much different from how we live today.

People died of infections, diseases, and all sorts of other ailments, and there was the threat of violence to consider. The west was known for being “lawless” and some people took advantage of the fact that you could practically do whatever you wanted. (If you really want to see how gritty and brutal life was like back then, watch the TV show Deadwood. You’ll see gunfights, murders, robberies, hangings, and other acts of aggression that were all-too-common in that era.)

Life for anyone in the “wild” west was tough. Combine that with the fact that women virtually were the property of their husbands and had no rights, and you have the makings for pretty rough times for women.

I incorporated a few of these elements into Lies, Love & Redemption. How could I not? The setting and time period have to be realistically represented in the book. Although readers might take issue with including violence in a romance, it has a place in the story (to a degree).

If everything was too perfect or too pretty, the book would lose the richness in details that bring it—and the characters—to life.

Having Sam face the threat of a potentially lethal infection, Cassie trying to help a woman escape a violent marriage, and Sam admitting the horrific truth of his past, all work together to give the book an authentic feel.

And part of an author’s job (especially when writing historical romances) is to let readers live the story through the eyes and experiences of the characters. One thing authors are told is to make life difficult for your hero and heroine. If there is no conflict or drama, the story becomes dull, and the characters have nothing to strive for and don’t grow.

Yes, I may have put Sam and Cassie (and a few other characters) through an emotional wringer, and yes, they had to face violent situations, but they’re strong and their challenges built up their resilience.

And of course, as in any romance, it all worked out happily-ever-after.

Here’s the summary and a brief excerpt:

Lies, Love & Redemption

Shot and left for dead, Sam Hixton stumbles into a general store on the Nebraska prairie and collapses into the arms of Cassie Wilcox.

Cassie’s world is turned upside down when the handsome stranger drops into her life. Sam is another complication she doesn’t need: her business is dying and her trouble with the townspeople is escalating. Yet she’s determined to keep the store open — no matter what the cost.

As Sam recovers from his injuries, he hides the truth about his identity and convinces Cassie to let him work in the store. He’s attracted to her and admires her independent nature but quickly realizes Cassie’s in way over her head. They fight their growing attraction, and Cassie questions whether she can trust her fragile heart to a mysterious stranger. Will he accept her once he knows about her troubled past?

Cassie resists Sam’s advances and represses her feelings until one fateful night when they give in to their fiery passion. Together, they work out a plan to save the store but find their efforts are thwarted—and their lives endangered—by the locals.

Sam’s secret returns to haunt him and pulls him away just when Cassie needs him the most. Will he regain her trust when she learns the truth?

Cassie has everything invested in the store—can she save it and find true love with Sam before it’s too late?

An Excerpt:

“I hate to tell you this, but you have a big problem.”

Sam broke off a chunk of bread and dipped it into the chicken broth. “Honey, I’ve got a lot of problems, starting with the fact that I got shot and nearly died. What else do I have to worry about?”

“A man who stands about six foot six.”

His heart skipped a beat. “Shit. Tell me it’s not your husband.”

“No.” Cassie laughed. “Luke, the sheriff. He was here this afternoon asking questions about you. Holloway’s a small town. Everyone knows everyone else’s business. Folks are bound to be curious when a shot-up stranger wanders into the only store, bleeding to death.”

He slurped more soup.

“Luke thinks you’re wanted, an outlaw, or… I don’t know, whatever he can dream up that might get him a reward.”

“I’m not wanted.” He gazed into Cassie’s brown eyes. “I know you have no reason to believe me, but I haven’t done anything wrong.”

“Luke will be back tomorrow morning, and he’s determined to talk to you. He’s gonna ask how you got here and who shot you. I don’t care what you tell him.” She rose and uncorked the bottle of medicine on the tray. “Drink this.”

“Doc left two?”

“No. This is something different. I took this off the shelf downstairs.”

“Won’t you get in trouble with your boss?”

Cassie chuckled. “Nope. I am the boss. It’s my store. I can take what I want.”

“Oh.” That was unusual. Most women couldn’t handle the responsibility of running a business. How had Cassie come to own a store?

“What’s in it?” he said, eyeing the bottle warily. Patent medicines, or snake oil treatments, often made you feel worse than if you took nothing at all. They were full of arsenic, turpentine, or kerosene. “I don’t take well to these medicinal potions.”

“And I don’t regularly offer them, but this should dull the pain.” She poured a spoonful of the amber liquid and held it out. “Open up.”

He was about to argue, then thought better of it. If this poison helped him sleep, he’d be content with that much, at least. “Couldn’t I have whiskey?”

Cassie grinned. “This concoction is about three-quarters whiskey. That’s why I keep it on the shelf.”

He gulped the medicine down, and his eyes watered. “It sure burns like whiskey,” he said, clearing his throat.

“Good. Now that you’ve had food and medicine, I’ll let you sleep.” Cassie set a glass of water on the side table and headed for the door. “I’ll come back for the tray in an hour. Try to rest. Luke will aim to catch you muddle-headed in the morning. I told him you were still unconscious.”

“Why did you lie?”

“I figured you could use the time to get your story straight. Luke’s nosy, like everyone else in this damn town. We don’t get strangers coming through here, so you’re a curiosity. People are going to be suspicious of you.”

He nodded, grateful for the warning. The less Cassie and the other townsfolk knew about him and his past, the better.

Title: Dragon’s Treasure

Author: Maya Starling

Genre: NA Fantasy

“She was the girl who longed for the freedom of the dragon, and he was the dragon who longed to be a man.”

A heroine reclaiming her fate. A dragon with a secret. A prince on a quest.

Olivia flees to the forest seeking freedom from her family’s demands. She finds refuge in a cave, only to discover it is a dragon’s lair. The dragon, Kaden, is not the monster she first thinks him to be. After overcoming her initial fright – of not being eaten – Olivia discovers that the dragon has a gentle heart.

Kaden is resigned to loneliness after centuries of wandering the lands. Meeting Olivia brings joy to his solitary life, and never has he dreamed that a young woman would be the one to start the change in him.

A storm brews on the horizon.

A prince with a handsome face and a cruel heart is on a quest to slay the dragon, and take the throne. He will do whatever it takes to have what he believes is his to own. And now, he has his eyes set on the pretty little maiden from the forest. He will make her his Queen, whether she wants it or not.

Excerpt

Dragon's Treasure by Maya StarlingPride swelled within Kaden, lifting away the years of darkness that had consumed him as joy filled him for making her that happy. It was a wonderful feeling, after so long alone in the dark, to indulge someone else’s desires.

Olivia’s eyes had never been wider and she was sure her jaw was going to hurt for days because of how much she was smiling. She also didn’t care how many bugs she was going to swallow along the way.

Her heart pounded against her ribcage as fear, exhilarating fear, coursed through her veins mixed with a rush she had never felt before. She couldn’t put it into words; it was so much more exciting and liberating than the first time she went galloping on her own. So liberating. The world far beneath her feet.

Trees rushed by under them in a blur of greens, but as she squinted ahead, she was once again amazed by the view.

Looking at the treetops, Olivia thought that she could just reach down and brush her hands through the leaves, caressing the forest itself. All the green below them and the blue vastness above them made her realize just how big the world was, how tiny her role in it.

So this is what it feels like to fly. Right then, a new addiction bloomed inside her. She had to experience it again. Kaden would surely agree to such request.

Olivia wrapped the little bit of loose rope she had around her hand until it was taut as she sat upright, gazing all around them. She closed her eyes for a few moments and cherished the wind whipping at her face, the chill leaving a trail of gentle nips on her flushed cheeks. But she didn’t mind any of it. She feasted on it; it fed her mind and her soul, refreshing her spirit.

Opening her eyes, Olivia laughed out loud and a happy whoop escaped her lips.

Kaden veered to the left, circling around then flying back to their little clearing. As they glided above forest, the dragon spread his wings wide. He looked back at Olivia when her happy laughter reached his ears.

The healing balm of her being, her joy and innocence spread over his wounded soul.

Book Blast: Captain Hawkins by H. Peter Alesso

The author will be awarding a $25 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour.

Genre: Sci-fi

Captain HawkinsJamie Hawkins was living on an obscure planet in the twenty third-century when on one fateful night—his life changed forever. His heroic effort to save the lives of innocent women and children, caught in the cross-fire of war, placed him squarely in the crosshairs of avenging soldiers.

A former marine, Hawkins was stunned when his rescue effort was seen as treachery. Unfairly convicted of treason by a corrupt judge, he was sentenced to life imprisonment at hard labor on an infamous penal colony.

Once in prison, Hawkins was mistreated by a paranoid warden, but his courage and perseverance won him the admiration and trust of his fellow convicts. While he was plotting his escape, an enemy attacked the planet—giving this daring warrior his chance. Together with his fellow prisoners, he launched a bold assault and high-jacked an enemy warship.

From then on, the exploits of Captain Jamie Hawkins became legendary.

Excerpt

“Sir, I was working with the data techs trying to analyze the communication patterns of the enemy fleet,” said Joshua, licking his dry lips, excitedly. “And I’ve came across a very unusual signal.”

Hawkins gave him an encouraging nod.

“It was a burst of radio signals from deep space. I traced it to either a 4 billion-year-old star in a constellation 44.4 light years away, or to another star in that same constellation, but much farther away. That means that the radio waves have been travelling to us for at least forty-four point four years.”

Hawkins said, “Deep space radio signals have many plausible explanations, such as radio interference from planets, or rogue signals caused by local planet microwave devices.

“That’s true, Captain. It could be just the effect of a natural space object like a pulsating quasar, but it’s also possible . . . I think maybe . . . it could be a message from another civilization.”

Now smiling broadly, Hawkins said, “Given the unlikeness of that, why are you concerned?”

“Because it was not a one-off event,” said Joshua excitedly and then pausing to catch his breath. “I’ve recorded a half dozen repeating signals from the exact same source.”

Nodding, Hawkins said, “That’s a little more interesting, but there are explanations for that too.”

“But Captain, the implications could be mind-blowing. Imagine, what if it was an alien civilization, and they were far more advanced than us, and they were trying to make contact? After centuries of fruitlessly scanning the stars and finding no evidence that anyone else is out there, this could be . . .  could be . . .”

Joshua became paralyzed by his own imagination.

“Joshua, even if this signal were not natural, it might still be the product of one of Earth’s colonies—not aliens.”

“No sir, I’ve checked. There were no Earth colonies in the vicinity of the signal’s star cluster when we last had contact with Earth, fifty years ago,” said Joshua.

Joshua wanted to argue further, but couldn’t offer any additional proof for his cause.

Hawkins said, “I agree, we should continue to monitor this frequency, but for now, it’ll have to remain a mystery.”

It was only a few days later that Joshua returned to argue, “I’ve been working to decrypt the deep space signal using our AI computer with the help of a data tech.”

Hawkins was surprised, but also impressed with Joshua’s initiative.

“What does a deep space signal have to do with our enemy’s Top Secrets communication network?”

“Everything.”

“You’ll have to explain that.”

“Let me give you a metaphor for how I solved this puzzle, because it is a puzzle.”

“Go on.”

“Think of a portrait of a woman, say the Mona Lisa. Now consider a jigsaw puzzle of the Mona Lisa—a picture of a woman cut into a thousand irregularly sized pieces and spread out for someone to reassemble.”

“A kid’s game.”

“Yes, sir.”

Science Fiction and Romance: A Perfect Pairing

Science fiction romance is a perfect pairing of science fiction and romanceYears ago when I took a course in romance writing, most of the participants listed science fiction as the one genre they’d never read. Only two of us in the room were sci-fi readers, so at least I had an ally!

It may not seem like it at first glance, but science fiction and romance aren’t opposites. In fact, science fiction romance is a very active and popular genre in its own right.

If you’ve only seen sci-fi movies or TV shows, you’ve probably only seen one side. Namely space ships, battles in space, alien invasions – usually with men leading the charge. Or you’ve seen superheroes saving the day, while the love interest looks on with admiration.

Sure, that’s part of sci-fi, but it’s a big universe. Science fiction is a genre that covers so many sub-genres, that it would be impossible to list them all here.

Science fiction paired with romance isn’t rare at all. In fact, it often ends up getting folded into Paranormal, which might be why it’s sometimes hidden from view. But there are many authors out there who are creating worlds that range from dystopian to space opera to military. Love is front and center in these stories, just as it is in any romance.

Science fiction romance is a perfect pairing of science fiction and romance. Hathor Legacy: Outcast by Deborah A BaileyIn my Hathor Legacy series, I wanted the relationship between Nadira and Jonathan to be part of the story, not a sideline.

Nadira has her job to do on a world across the galaxy, but she also has to juggle love, commitment and (particularly in Hathor Legacy: Revelations) family drama.

Her love life is just as important to her as solving crimes (as she does in Hathor Legacy: Outcast and Hathor Legacy: Burn). Through the series, her relationship with Jonathan progresses right along with the other parts of the story.

Science fiction and romance actually are a perfect pairing, whether they’re set on Earth in the future or in a universe far, far away. Science fiction romance is a place where characters can explore the galaxy while they navigate their personal lives and desires.

BLURB:

Sunrise Over Brasov by Stephanie BurkhartRosa Getzi lives a life of intrigue at Poiana Brasov with Clement, a werewolf, and Cassandra, the witch. Her past doesn’t matter to her – until she discovers what it holds.

Prince Michael Sigmaringen joins his sister-in-law, Caroline, and the vampire prince, Darius, in a daring rescue, igniting Rosa’s desire to find her family. However, all is not as it appears. Rickard, Rosa’s friend, escapes with her. Clement will go to any lengths to get Rosa and Rickard back.

At Darius’ fortress, Michael soon discovers Rickard is a new breed of werewolf – one who can control the change, and Clement hopes to exploit Rickard’s abilities.

Michael’s courage, strengths, and convictions will be tested like never before. Can Michael and Rosa find true happiness and the rid the lupine haunting of the Sigmaringens once and for all?

Excerpt:

“Why would you want to stay? Clement kidnapped you.”

Disconcerted, she pointedly glanced away from his hard stare. What did he mean by kidnapped? Clement didn’t keep her behind bars and feed her only bread and water. Rosa could even go into Brasov to shop as long as Lucien or one of the bodyguards went with her.

“I’m going to take you back to your mother.”

Her head snapped toward his direction. Mother? Of course she had a mother — a family, even — only she had no recollection of them. So why did her body fill with warmth at the

mention of her mother by a man she hadn’t seen before, but was hauntingly familiar? She pursed her lips, torn by conflicting emotions.

“Caroline and Darius can’t keep this up. Now get dressed or I’ll dress you myself.”

“You’ll find me an unwilling subject.”

He drew in a deep breath and raked a hand through his thick ebony hair. “You are exasperating.”

“So I’ve been told.”

“By who?” His eyes narrowed.

“Rickard.”

His jaw clenched and his gaze darkened. Quick as a panther, he closed the distance

between them and grabbed her wrists, tugging her toward him. She pressed up against the length of his body. His muscles were hard and defined…and again, hauntingly familiar. His hazel eyes grew murky and he claimed her lips with a forceful kiss.

Her heart swelled in happiness and then anger took over. Who was he to kiss her like this? She struggled, but he crushed her to him, ravishing her mouth.

That nagging familiarity buzzed at the base of her skull. She should know this man. Despite her ignorance, her body sensed a knowledge of him she couldn’t explain. Her core warmed at his insistence. She struggled less.

Book Blast: Bounty’s Song by Mandy Colton

mbb_tourbanner_bountyssong

GENRE: Contemporary  Romance

BLURB:

mediakit_bookcover_bountyssongGage Knight is a Texas bounty hunter and just doing a tough job when he’s sent to Nashville to pick up a grifting high-dollar fugitive. He arrives at the right place at almost the right time, but he makes a big mistake when he leaves.

Once a debutante, Danica Chastain is now a struggling songwriter with a dream of landing a job in the music business. On the day when her hard work seems to be heading in the right direction, a gruff man with a dark presence and wolfish eyes arrives at her door.

Although their immediate chemistry is off the charts, the two clash—for good reason. Danica is not who he thinks she is, and he’s not listening…

Excerpt:

That little bitch had pulled her con off so smoothly, Danica knew just like she knew her rent hadn’t been paid that Tara, if that was even her real name, the money, and her stuff was long gone. She would just wait and call the cops after her appointment at the record company tomorrow. Focus on your meeting with Hank, Danica. If that went well, she’d just find her another roommate, take what was left of her clothes, and leave this dump. She would hold her head up and keep moving forward with her mind on her future and dreams.

* * * *

The next morning, Danica spent much of her time stomping around and grumbling. Her routine was screwed. She’d found the coffee pot gone first and then, after taking her shower, found her blow dryer lifted as well. She’d had to painstakingly brush her hair dry. Then there was the underwear dilemma she’d faced next. She had none. It was all gone, and the only thing she could do was put the bra back on from the day before, which was not going to work for the panties. There had been too much freaking out the night before about bigger issues than to remember to wash them out or even worry about something as minor as going sans the drawers. She’d just have to temporarily go commando and leave early enough to buy herself some undies on the way to her appointment.

She was about ready to leave the apartment when there was a knock on the door. Danica looked out the peephole but didn’t see anyone. Hmm. She shrugged, opened the door to take a step out and look, immediately walking into a wall of man and muscle. Yelping in surprise, she quickly moved her eyes up to his face. Whoa. At first glance, the guy had a dark, daunting presence, almost intimidating as he loomed over her. A closer inspection made another thought cross her mind. What a hunk-o-man! Talk about tall, beefy, and ruggedly handsome. Not exactly swarthy but deeply tanned and a nice amount of past-five-oh-clock shadow framed a nicely chiseled jawline. The whole package made her shiver a little. She could smell the guy, he was so close, and his cologne was a heady alpha male blend of sweat, the non-stinky man-musk kind, and spice. Ooh, and leather. In fear of being zapped by a jolt of supercharged testosterone mixed with potently virile pheromones, she took a step back.

He stood there, intimidating-like, looking down his nose at her, eyeing her, nothing moving except for a pair of odd color eyes. They were mesmerizing. He cleared his throat, which broke her staring spell.

She finally said, “If you’re looking for Tara, she’s gone.” She scanned him again. At least the bitch had a little taste in who she screwed. Couldn’t say the same for the guys.

Suddenly his eyes changed and he looked a bit amused. What a pair of peepers he had on that strikingly handsome and chiseled face. The guy had bright-gray eyes, like a husky dog or a wolf. My goodness, how beautiful they were and framed by lush lashes, those making her a little jealous. Danica was curious if the eye color was real or if he might be wearing contacts. Before she had the chance to ask, he opened his mouth.

Book Excerpt:

Nicholas guides me to the side of the bar, to the back and unexpectedly we reach a lift, we step in and he presses P on the lift button. Alone in the lift I face him dead on, I can’t  help myself, his scent, and  presence it’s  doing things to me and awaking parts of me that have been dead for so long since Danny and I hit our rough patch. I grab his tie and pull him towards me then kiss him with passion. He’s stunned and taken back I can tell. His hands are full with a  champagne glass in one and a bucket with iced champagne in the other, he’s  unable to touch me or push me away; by the way he’s  kissing me so passionately in return I doubt very much we wants our passionate kissing to stop. We reach our destination and I release him, leaving a lipstick stain on his lips I playfully remove it with a finger and step out the lift in front of him swaying my hips. I half turn around to face him, Nicholas is still standing in the same spot I left him with his champagne glass, ice bucket and a huge wide grin on his face…. Damn he looks so good.

“What are you waiting for Mr D’Croix?”  I turn and say over my shoulder in a seductive way, he laughs. “You took me by surprise Ms. Kate.”
