Author Q&A with C.R. Moss

Do you have a favorite scene? If so, what was it?

~ In A Wish Across Time, it’s when Cassandra’s younger self was with her boyfriend up in the mountains…
She felt so alive, so connected to the earth and sky. It was as if she could touch the universe, feel the heat of the stars, burn hot and fast like the cosmic rays just by being with Ryan.

Any challenges in writing these books?

~ There were some. This is a “new” series of mine. I say “new” because the first three books had found a publishing home once upon a time, but alas, as some relationships go, that wasn’t meant to be a lifetime one. Back in their ex’s home, they had different titles and a different series name. The challenges came when I had to give the books new life. The fictional house and family were relocated to Nevada from NJ which meant a big revamp on the setting. More words were added, along with the stories being re-edited.

I think the stories can be read separately as standalones, but it’d be beneficial to read them in order. I do have plans to expand the series now that the first three books are out. In the first book, Dream Across Time, the heroine dreams her way back in time to meet her hero, who happens to be a ghost in the present. In the second release, Journey Across Time, the hero comes forward to the present day and finds his soulmate. Then the third story, A Wish Across Time, is a good ol’ contemporary romance that brings one woman’s past and present together.

When you’re not writing, what are you up to?

~ My hobbies are reading, crocheting, playing cards with friends and family, and traveling.

Do you have a favorite writing environment?

~ I have an office in my home where I do most of my work. I normally have the television on in the background. I will listen to music on occasion if I really have to go deep and can’t afford distractions. When it comes to music, I usually have “Spa” music on, sometimes it’s Country and sometimes it’s Alternative though. I do like to take my notebook outside when the weather is good and write the old fashioned way with paper and pen.

Do you have a favorite book?

~ I’ve read Anne Rice’s Beauty series a couple of times as well as Interview with the Vampire. I’ve also read A Knight in Shining Armor and Remembrance by Jude Deveraux a few times, too. I guess it’s the characters and world building in the stories that keeps me going back to them.

How long have you been a writer?

~ For a very brief period of time, I had ideas of becoming a teacher or an astronaut. Both occurred before the age of ten. But for the most part, I knew I wanted to write at a young age, as early as I learned to read. I was always cooking up stories to entertain myself in the rural area I lived in. Had to since there were no other kids around to play with. My defining moment came when I received an A in English in grade school. I was just shy of being a teenager when I had my ‘calling.’ Ever since then, most of my choices in life have revolved around my goal of becoming a full-time fiction writer and being published.

Upon my ‘calling,’ I had written a story for a magazine. It’d been rejected, but that was my start. After that, I began studying the craft of writing. It started with working on the school newspaper in middle school to creative writing classes and Teens Art Festivals in high school. I received a BA in Communications, Information and Library Studies from Rutgers College with a strong concentration in English Lit/Writing and Interpersonal Communications/PR. Studying under the mentorship of Terri Valentine (author of ‘Sands of Time,’ a Zebra Historical Romance), I honed my novel writing skills.

In the mid to late 2000s, I finally put my foot down, got over my nerves and took the plunge into submitting stories to publishers. I’ve been published since 2008, and as for the craft, I’m still learning things by taking the occasional online class, attending industry conferences, and devouring all the writing how-to books I can get my hands on.

What’s on your “bucket list?”

~ I’d love to go to Antarctica. I hate the cold but I think it’d be cool to visit that location. I want to visit South America as well.

What’s your favorite song on your playlist?

~ For A Wish Across Time, it’s a tie between Wicked Game by Chris Isaak from the album, “Best of Chris Isaak” & Separate Way by Journey from the album, “Frontiers”

BookExcerpt

Excerpt – A Wish Across Time by C.R. Moss

Her gaze darted from the paper to the people at the altar. Rings. Her heart sank in anguish. Sorrow sat heavy on her stomach. She fingered the black cat pin she wore on the lapel of her navy blue jacket. The handmade accessory was an artist’s rendition of her cat, Myrddin.

That night, long ago, when Ryan had dumped her, a kitten had wandered out of the tree line surrounding the mountain home of her childhood and into her life. The cat seemed to have known she needed consoling. It only took an instant for the two of them to become attached to each other. Myrddin grew to be a great companion and familiar. Cassandra had the pin created and cast a spell on it to always stay connected and comforted by her feline friend. Sometimes she wondered if Myrddin would have trotted out of the tree line had she and Ryan stayed together.

Ryan rubbed the back of his neck again and glanced into gathered throng of guests. His haunting gaze caught hers.

“Ryan…psst…Ryan,” the groom uttered.

Ryan shook his head and looked at the man in front of him. Subdued snickers tittered through the sanctuary.

“The rings, please?” The minister held out his hand.

“Oh, geez, sorry,” Ryan stammered, shoved his hand into his pocket, and fumbled to remove the rings. He held the bands out in the palm of his hand.

The minister blessed them and handed one to Lara and the other to the groom. Jeffrey placed the band on Lara’s finger, repeating the words per the minister’s prompts, “I give you this ring as a symbol of my love and faithfulness. As I place it on your finger, I commit my heart and soul to you. I ask you to wear this ring as a reminder of the vows we have spoken today, our wedding day, and as a reminder of my undying love for you.”

Cassandra drew in a shuddering breath. Way back when, on an autumn evening, Ryan had almost said the same to her during a romantic moment. Remembering his words, tears clouded her eyes. You’re my love. My heart and soul I promise to you with this ring. He had then slipped a silver ring with a solid, milky white opal heart shape onto her right finger, the humps facing her nail, and placed a soft kiss on her lips. Her heart had been captured.

What a fool I was then.

Ryan glanced her way again.

She traced the edge of her pin and nibbled her lip. Was he trying to place her? Figure out who she was? A shiver ran through her body.

“Cass? Are you all right? You’ve gone pale,” Julie murmured near her ear.

Cassandra nodded, keeping her gaze glued to the wedding ceremony while toying with the cat pin. Calm yourself. You’re not that young girl anymore.

Lara took the other ring. She placed the band on Jeffrey’s finger and repeated the vows, “I give you this ring as a symbol of my love and faithfulness. As I place it on your finger, I commit my heart and soul to you. I ask you to wear this ring as a reminder of the vows we have spoken today, our wedding day, and as a reminder of my undying love for you.”

“By the power vested in me by the State of Nevada,” the reverend stated, “I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss each other.”

Jeffrey and Lara sealed their vows. Ryan took one more look in her direction. One of his eyebrows rose in tandem with the corner of his lips.

Her gaze widened. No. He can’t remember. I can’t deal with him. I don’t want to deal with any man, not after what he did—and after the fiasco with Charlie. She touched her pin and chanted under her breath, begging the universe to make him forget any memories he had of her.

BookExcerpt
“Grief does strange things to people, Francois.”

“True. The reason the landscapes don’t work isn’t because they aren’t good. Your emotions seeped through, but I can sense you feel you have to show what people have come to associate with you.” He tugged her to him then folded her in his arms. He tilted her chin, forcing her to look up at him. “The young woman who first waltzed into my gallery was eager to take on the world. Bring her back. Paint with abandonment. One doesn’t control a fire. It either flares into bright flames or is extinguished.”

Didn’t he understand she wanted to have her old mojo return? Trella eased from his embrace, wrapping her arms around her middle. “Nothing I’ve tried works,” she whispered.
He sighed. “You’re trying too hard. Art needs space to create.”

“The loss of Louis—”

“He died. Yes, it is sad. But you didn’t die. No one blames you for living.”

Francois shooed her from the room, back into his office, before locking the door behind him and returning the key to his pocket. He picked up her sketchbook from his desk, flipping the pages one at a time before closing it with an audible snap. He didn’t say anything, and she glanced at him.

He held a hand over his heart. “Your key pieces,” he whispered. “Why are you hiding these?”

She froze in sudden shock. She’d forgotten to remove the drawings of Carlos.

“Look.” He flipped to a page. He held it up for her perusal. “The longing, the wanting. I feel it from the sketch. This is it!”

She bit her bottom lip as she studied the rendering of Carlos, naked and proud. If Francois recognized the latent desire she possessed for her husband’s former partner, would anyone else?

“Why the gloomy face?”

She sighed. “I’d rather not use any of the drawings.”

He tapped the page. “These must make the show.”

He couldn’t be serious. If, by some miracle, Carlos did agree to be used as a model, could she withstand the pressure of people dissecting what they’d believe to be the intimate nature of their relationship? “I can’t. I never used a painting of Louis.”

“It’s no one’s business why you never used your husband as a subject. I figured you didn’t want to display your marriage to the world’s perusal.”

She nodded. Everyone assumed that, including Louis. In her soul, she knew her paintings of her husband wouldn’t be on par with her other work.

“Francois, this man…I can’t.”

He perched on his desk. “I’ve been where you are, Trella. Art does not lie. There is no subterfuge. You cannot pretend what doesn’t exist.”

But could she pretend what existed, didn’t?

My Review of Painted Passion

The story starts when police officer Carlos Diaz’ partner, Louis is shot during an investigation. As he’s dying, he asks Carlos to watch over his wife, Trella and keep her safe. Two years later Trella finds a suspicious file on her laptop that might relate to her husband’s murder, and this discovery brings Carlos back into her life. They team up to unravel the events that led to her husband’s death, while they try to resist the strong attraction between them.

I’m a big fan of romantic suspense, and this story hit all the right notes for me. The action moved quickly and I found it hard to put the book down. Carlos is a very hot and sexy hero, and the scenes with him and Trella are very sensual and romantic. I also liked how Trella’s artistic career was woven into the story as well.

I don’t want to give any spoilers, so I’ll say that the ending was very suspenseful and satisfying. I’m looking forward to reading more from this author. (Received a review copy in exchange for an honest review.)

Historical Romances—Far From Old Fashioned

Dangerous Indenture coverby Kelli A. Wilkins

Hi everyone!

Take a minute and consider these romance plots:

A father is desperate to find a suitable husband for his wild daughter, but she rejects all her suitors and wants the one man she can’t have.

An outcast is persecuted by the people in her small town and relies on a handsome stranger to help her escape.

Disowned by his well-to-do family, a spoiled socialite is forced to find a job and make his own way in the world. He falls in love with a sweet shop girl and suffers heartache as he sees how the “other half” lives.

A young woman leaves everything behind to start a new job far from home. She tries to solve a murder as she falls in love with her employer’s son.

A wealthy husband and wife invite couples to their country home for a weekend of sex games and wanton fun.

Sound like interesting books? Would it surprise you to learn that they are all plots from my historical romances? (In order, they are: A Most Unusual Princess, The Viking’s Witch, The Pauper Prince, Dangerous Indenture, and A Midsummer Night’s Delights.)

Some people think historical romances are boring “old fashioned” stories about royalty, dukes, castles, and historical battles. But with a few plot and character modifications, any of my historicals could take place in modern times. Princesses could become spoiled actresses, singers, or reality show stars. Imagine the pampered prince as a high-paid arrogant actor who is destined for a fall from grace.

I like to bring my historical romances “out of the history books” and into the everyday lives of my characters. My stories aren’t weighted down with heavy discussions about politics or war. Instead, I focus on the lives of people and how they meet, fall in love, overcome their obstacles and challenges, and eventually live happily-ever-after.

Back in the day, not everyone was a noble lord or lady who lived in a castle and attended fancy balls. There were plenty of “regular people” (considered by some to be lower class or peasants) with stories to tell, lives to live, and love to share.

My female characters are far from the “helpless heroines” who graced the pages of historicals years ago. These women aren’t wearing frilly dresses and hosting tea parties while waiting to find the perfect man. In most cases, they’re too busy trying to keep themselves alive or fighting against perceived notions of how a “proper” woman should behave to look for a husband. And if they do find a man they want to be with, they are only willing to accept love on their terms. The Viking's Witch

Claudette from The Pauper Prince and Shauna from Dangerous Indenture are two examples. These strong women would be right at home in a contemporary romance novel.

When I sit down to write a historical (and I’ve written a dozen of them), I never know where the characters will take me. Each book starts out from a different place. Sometimes I’ll know the plot before I meet the characters (as in The Viking’s Witch and The Dark Lord) and other times I’ll know everything about the characters and then have to work with them to uncover the plot. (This happened with my latest historicals, Wilderness Bride and Dangerous Indenture.)

But no matter how the plot unfolds, I always make sure the characters are interesting and lively. I don’t have “stuffy shirts” making long-winded speeches about politics, law, or anything not crucial to the storyline. You won’t find me (or my characters) giving anyone a history lesson! Just because historical romances are set in time periods before cars, the Internet, and cell phones, that doesn’t make them boring. There is plenty of action, adventure, intrigue, danger, comedy, and depending on the heat level, sensual love scenes.

Romances and forbidden love affairs aren’t new. Throughout history, people have loved and lusted after each other, regardless of social, political, or so-called “moral” rules. Hundreds of years ago there were plenty of “sordid” affairs going on behind closed doors. People were having sex, but it wasn’t mentioned openly or discussed in “proper” social circles.

I thought about this “forbidden” subject and decided to write a romance that addressed that “taboo”. It became the theme in my historical/fantasy trilogy: A Midsummer Night’s Delights, A Midwinter Night’s Delights, and Ultimate Night’s Delights. In these stories, a respectable man in high society is basically running an invitation-only sex club for swingers. (As you can imagine, these novellas gave readers who thought historicals were old fashioned and boring a real shock!)

Every romance genre has its fans. Some people like to read contemporary romances, others live for paranormals, and there are those who switch up genres and read anything that sounds appealing. I like writing historicals—but I also write contemporary, paranormal, fantasy, and gay romances, too. Why? Because I enjoy writing great romances about interesting characters that fall in love, wherever and whenever that may be.
Happy Reading!
