SFR Brigade Presents: “Hathor Legacy: Outcast”

SFR Brigade Presents is a regular feature where authors posts snippets of their published works and WIP. Check out the other authors here and read more about their books!

This is an excerpt from my new book, “Hathor Legacy: Outcast” which is the first in a series.

In this snippet, Jonathan and Nadira are being pursued by security and have taken refuge from a storm. While they’re at the house, Jon has a nightmare about the mine where his father was presumed to have been killed during a robbery.

Running. He was running through the twisting tunnels that led deeper into the mine. And yet his pursuer was still behind him. Jon didn’t know where he was going as he dashed through the damp, hollowed out caverns.

Rocks moved beneath his feet. Another step would send him tumbling over the edge of a precipice. Digging his fingers into the openings of the slick, machine-blasted walls, he groped his way back from the edge…

“Jonathan! Wake up, Jon.” A soft voice echoed through the darkness. Calling him back.

His eyes snapped open as he gasped for air. “What? Where am I?”

Nadira was kneeling on the bed in front of him, her gold-flecked, brown eyes shimmering. “You were dreaming. The storm’s over. We have to go.”

He sat up and ran his hand through his hair. “How long was I asleep?” A dream? It felt real, right down to the dust he still tasted in his mouth. But why would he dream about being in the mines?

“Almost an hour. I was talking to you and all I heard was a snore.” She eased off the bed.

“I don’t snore.” Stretching, he joined Nadira at the window.

The sea was back to its regular sapphire blue calm, the waves gently lapping onto the shore.

About the book…

On the planet, Hathor, a powerful group called the Guardians serves as the security force for Novacorp, the corporation that runs Hathor with its ruthless monopoly. Nadira, as one of the most powerful Guardians, is expected to use her intuition and telekinetic powers to keep the capital city safe from thieves and intruders.
Jonathan Keel, son of a mine CEO on the nearby planet, Astarte, is wealthy, privileged and used to getting what he wants. When his father goes missing after a robbery and explosion at the mine, he defies the authorities and heads to Hathor to search for him and for the robbers.

Security is on high alert and Nadira is charged with protecting Jon. She rescues him from an vicious attack and discovers that the Guardians have another agenda that has nothing to do with solving the crime.

Jonathan finds evidence of his father’s possible involvement, while his attraction to Nadira forces her to confront all she has known about being a Guardian, especially the rule to put duty before her personal feelings.

Struggling with their growing desires, and chased by company security, Jon and Nadira flee the city. But solving the crime leads them to endure betrayals from the people closest to them, as secrets are revealed that not only link their pasts but also threaten to destroy Jon’s family and separate him from Nadira forever.

Where Writers Really Get Their Ideas…Part 3

Guest post by Kelli A. Wilkins

Hi Everyone,

We continue with Part 3 in my blog series, “Where do you get your ideas?” with a short recap. Previously we learned that ideas are everywhere and many story ideas often come from observing something (people, surroundings, etc.). Last time we learned how to play the “what if” game to generate new ideas. This month, we go “In Search Of…” ideas.

One common ailment that can plague writers is wanting to write something, but not knowing what to write. In this case, you have to get up and physically go in search of an idea. How? It’s easier than it sounds. You can take a trip to your local library and flip through different magazines and newspapers to give you ideas and refresh your muse. (For example, a story on adoption may prompt you to write a short story about a couple adopting a child. Or, perhaps that perfectly flawless model in a makeup ad is really an android.) You can also search the Internet for articles, news stories (“strange” news stories can spark all kinds of ideas) or research topics you may be interested in writing about (haunted dolls, Hawaii, navy SEALs, etc.).

Whenever you visit friends or relatives, look for interesting settings or people that could inspire you to write a story. (The creepy old house down the block from your cousin’s condo could be a perfect setting for your next horror tale.) If you’re on vacation and take a tour of a historic locale, it may inspire you to write a non-fiction piece about the place or set a novel in that time period.

Don’t be afraid to ask friends, family, or coworkers for ideas. Remember, everyone has thousands of personal experiences that could be transformed into story ideas. Get people talking about themselves and you may have more ideas than you can handle! Ask your friends about their worst date, how they met their significant other, what their wedding was like, if they ever saw a ghost, etc.

Real-life stories involving real people add believability to the most outrageous situations. If your friends and family don’t have interesting stories from start to finish, why not combine a few stories into one?

Just for fun: Here are some ideas that could be used in your next story. I’ve broken them down into setting, characters, time of year/day, themes, and even threw in some props. Why not pick a few, mix and match, and see what develops? Play “what if” and let your imagination run wild!

Settings: abandoned strip mall, car dealership, grocery store at 3 am, a wooden bridge, a cemetery, the beach, 1970s drive in, a car wash

Characters: a black cat, female police officer, 8 year-old-child, three sisters, a corpse, man in wheelchair
Time of Year/Day: winter, midnight, 6am, 8pm, Halloween, during an eclipse, 1967, 1539
Themes: revenge, loss, greed, love, contentment, boredom, bullying, keeping a secret, jealousy
Props: a chainsaw, three marbles, a towel, a book of spells with a page missing, a pink lamp, bowl of cat food, a shoe

Next time you’re stuck for something to write, start looking for ideas. Real-world experiences, quirky people, and different locales will motivate your muse. Go for a drive or a walk and write about the first thing you see. Talk to people. Most of them think their lives are very interesting and enjoy sharing stories. Keep your eyes open and look for the ideas that are all around you. You never know what you’ll discover!

This is the third of a four-part series. Next time, find out how you can let ideas come to you!

Katherine Givens’ New Romance Novel: “In Her Dreams”

Today author Katherine Givens is stopping by to share an excerpt from her new book, In Her Dreams.

She was lost in the depths of his emerald eyes, amber drops floating in the seductive pools. The man reclined in a wingback chair, surrounded by shelved books. His head was tilted slightly downwards, his gaze piercing her where she stood. Hair the colour of antique gold shimmered in the dim candlelight. His skin was bronzed like the helmet of an Ancient Greek warrior.  His harsh features seemed to be chiselled from stone, but laugh lines encircled a passionate mouth. A navy blue coat and white waistcoat hid what could only be a perfectly sculpted chest. A white cravat covered his neck. Pearl grey breeches accentuated muscular legs.

The man reminded her of a golden lion, the king of a pride. His soul must’ve been older than time itself, for he seemed to hold the secrets of the universe in his mind. This man was temptation embodied.

‘Back again, my dear?’ he inquired, his voice like velvet.

Although confidence rang in his tone, his emerald eyes revealed the humanity of this divine creature. At the bottom of those depths lay an expanse of loneliness. Blessed with beauty, he was lacking in companionship and love. It was as if he were a traveller lost in a desert with only mirages to keep him company.

‘I could not stay away,’ she declared, her voice quaking as the man rose from his chair and stalked across the room.

Evangeline took a sharp intake of breath, for the full sight of his robust body was more than a woman could take. He was tall, over six feet. His build was as formidable as the strongest castle wall, built to protect from the worst of sieges. That handsome face of his, a face Adonis would’ve fought for, matched the masculine beauty of his body.

Settling beside her, he said, ‘Nor could I. Not now. Not ever.’

The two studied one another. Both seemed to find it hard to believe the other was there. The silence that shrouded the room as they studied one another deepened the strength of this ethereal spell.

‘Is it because I am a diversion?’

‘Nay.’ He raised her hand to his lips. ‘Life would be meaningless without your visits.’

‘I could not endure my own existence without you,’ she replied, a bit breathless.

‘As a man without friends or comrades, I would be the most lonesome wretch wandering the earth.’ Pain entered his expression, the pain of one who had suffered years of isolation. His voice cracking, he continued, ‘I would be completely alone.’

Her heart nearly split in two upon witnessing his agony. She lifted a hand and caressed his cheek. ‘You never shall be.’

‘You have been vital to my life, my dreams, for these past few months.’ Turning his head, he kissed the palm of her hand. He exhaled, his breath tickling her skin. ‘Without you I I fear I would not know how to live.’

‘Do not say such things.’ Framing his face, she forced him to gaze into her eyes. ‘I shall always be with you.’

‘And I with you.’ Desperation was threaded throughout the statement. ‘I am entirely yours,’ he murmured as he angled his head, preparing to taste the sweetness of her lips…

About In Her Dreams

A flirty, fun, mix-and-match romance about two sisters who are betrothed to the wrong men…
Evangeline Vernon is a woman on the verge of spinsterhood — until the prim and proper Duke of Manchester steps in. Her family is pleased with the match, but the duke is not the passionate man Evangeline craves. Her heart belongs to an alluring, golden-haired gentleman, perfect in every way…except one: he doesn’t exist.
Angela Vernon is everything a proper, well-brought-up woman should be. She knows her place and understands society’s expectations — which include not being jealous of her sister and not coveting her sister’s suitor. But how can she bear the heartache of watching the only man she loves marry not only her sister, but a woman who doesn’t see past his exterior to the man he is beneath?
